The threads on breaking and another on Matchroom's ways and other promoters' tournies, etc., it occurred to me that there needs to be a distinction in pool between being a recreational game vs. being an entertaining game from watching it.
When playing the game for recreation, it seems the rules and formats desired are different from those who watch it for entertainment. Alternating vs winner breaks, color of balls and a cloth, pocket sizes, etc. A player has different desires than a watcher, for some things.
I like both playing and watching, so my ideas about it are based on both. But, if more money is desired in the game, entertainment has to become paramount, imho.
A guy can still play as he wants for recreation, but if "we" want more money and popularity in the game, entertainment has to become paramount for tournies and such.
For example, we had our state tourney in town last weekend. Yesterday, I looked up who won what. Nothing on the web site. Nothing. Not only was there no climax to ANY of the categories of play for anyone interested in it to watch, there is no posting of who won. When did they win? Probably at 2 am on MONDAY morning. Not entertaining for anyone. Entry fees being the main source of income has its limits.
Can I get some shout outs for distinguishing between entertainment and recreation in pool?
