Pool 'Seasons' around the world

Still crazy after all these years

Hello,

I have noticed that all summer there are postings about various tournaments, action games, league play, and general matches. Here in the Canadian prairies (or Saskatoon at least), there is a definite pool 'season' and it ain't now in the summer :( I find that most of the regular pool players around here do not play much from May through until September. Leagues do not run, and the regular tournaments are mostly suspended. The pool scene picks up as the weather gets colder. I suppose after many months of cold winter, folks around here are anxious to be outdoors in the summer ...

Are there distinguishable pool seasons in your neck of the woods ?

There usually are more leauges and tourneys come fall and winter. But we still have league / tourneys year round. Some times the tournament numbers fall off a bit in the summer, but not alot.

The poolrooms around here are less crowded in the summer. A lot of people play golf and do other outdoor activities instead. The place I go opens 3 hours later on weekends during summer.

But the true diehards will play year-round. I would guess most of the people on this board would be considered diehards.

Wally <~~ doesn't play golf but still has to do yardwork.

Tell me about it :D It's pretty much the same here, but when it does pick it up around October there's no shortage of players.

Summer is definitely the off-season for pool in New York. Leagues don't shut down but tend to have fewer players. In the summer, many choose outdoor sports, travel, or the beach over the poolroom.

It actually used to be worse. When I was growing up, most of the poolrooms in New York weren't air-conditioned, and even serious players often unscrewed their cues for a couple of months until the weather got cooler. If you've ever played pool in August in a room without air conditioning, I'm sure you understand why.

weather probably doesn't matter here.

hi davek i'm from the philippines. we only have summer and rainy season. it's a tropical country so it's predominantly humid with 'few' breaks when it's raining or there's a storm. i'm not big on pool halls so i can't really say what's the behavior of pool players and tournaments when its summer. we have airconditioned pool halls here so for it's regular patrons, it will not really matter if it's summer or not.

it's only since a few years ago when we started having 'big time' pool events here that have been going on an annual basis. when i say big time, i mean there are big names locally and internationally participating and the games are televised and available internationally on cable. in march to may (when it's summer here) there is asian 9 ball tour. since the sponsor, san miguel, is fil corporation, the 5th & last stop is being held in the philippines. last year, on cue 1 was in july. we did not have any last july. on cue 2 was in october. and 1st philippine open was in november. we're going to have on cue 3 on august 29-31. and there'll be a second phil open some time later. usually our tournaments are invitational. so the availability of the desired players is the top consideration notwithstanding the weather.
