Just wanted to say that I attended the pool seminar put on by The Monk this past weekend in Minneapolis Minn. It was a very informative and learning experience and I would ureg any one else that has the chance to attend. There was a guest appearence by Dr. Cue ( Tom Rossman ) On Sunday. Tom is one of the most best teachers that I have ever met. He is a very dedicated instructor beside being that worlds champion trick shot player.
Once again I want to say thanks to these wonderful people.

Just curious as to why

Pushout (or anyone else) - Just curious as to why you feel the Monk isn't a good teacher.

Personally, I'm not big into his personal / spiritual philosophies, but his basics seem OK, and he leaves the advanced stuff to other instructors.

I guess that my take went along with the other experienced players who saw him, not much we didn't already know. As far as his "four strokes", most of us have been doing them for years, just not quite as he described them. They have mostly to do with speed of stroke, as I look at them. For beginners, he's ok, I guess. I look at his claim of making great players out of good ones, or whatever it is, I'd like to know who he's made a great player.
Not a bad guy to talk to, I think there are MUCH better, less expensive instructers. Anyway, just my opinion.

I think the second part of your statement says why. The Monk is a promoter, a spiritual leader and a hustler (not road player). He is not a player, or a teacher. He uses other instructors material and to teach, primarily Tom. Tom is a great teacher. The Monk takes you down a road that leads you Rossman, while he is trying to reach in your pocket for every nickle he can get. While you, or any new player, can benefit from some of his stuff, it can be given in a less convoluted, and less expensive, manner by many very good instructors. His search for the dollar turns off many people, and rightfully so.

I only "know" the Monk from reading his free stuff on the web and from watching an instructional video of his that I borrowed from a friend. His writing style and repetitiveness are a put off for me. Watching his video was even worse. It's bad enough when you have to read the same thing over and over, but when a 60 minute video only has 5-10 minutes of content (I'm being generous), it is the veritable epitome of ennui. I did buy the Rossman banking series from him and the difference is night and day. Tom is a very good instructor with a ton of very good information. His tapes take a high level of concentration and are best watched in segments while working on the principles presented on the table. You could sleep through the entire Monk video and not miss anything.

My sentiments almost exactly, you're a little kinder than I am towards him. I'll just say I think "The Monk" and Kevin Trudeau have much in common and leave it at that.
"Hurry, hurry, step right up, get Dr. Tim's snake oil medicine, guaranteed to cure ...."

Fair enough on both of your posts. The Monk does seem to push an endless supply of materials that cover basics that he's covered in some earlier book or video. I haven't really seen any new insights from him since he partnered with Tom Rossman. And, the whole personal/spiritual philosophy stuff is a turn-off.

What do you think of the two or three quality women players that he's "produced"? I'm thinking of Sam Diep, Rachael Abbink, and Suzanne Bosselman. At least Suzanne won the BCA amateurs in '95, and I've seen Rachael play. Is there something he's teaching them that he's not sharing in his materials?

I'm not a Monk disciple myself, but I know at least two of them, so I have access to much of his materials.
 
Do they ever come to the western United States to do that seminar?
I would really like to go and see somthing like that, how much does it cost?

Check out Cue Tech's road show schedule. RandyG finds his way out west on a fairly regular basis. His 3-day class is one of the greatest values you will ever find. I promise you one of the best experiences in your pool career.

I agree whole heartedly with this. In terms of "bang for the buck" the money spend on Randy's pool school is only topped by money spent on Scott Lee's instruction which was the same stuff, but it was one on one.

Oh, Scott does a pretty good job of keeping himself in charge when he's giving lessons and thus got most of the words in. :) However, eating pizza after it was a might struggle between Scott and my wife as to who would get the most words in. :)

FWIW, not too long ago Rachael's sponsor flew Randyg out to FL on a private jet, just to work with her privately, to prepare her for the IPT. I'd say that has a lot more to do with why she's playing much better, than spending any time with the Monk. Randy, of course, went nuts when, as they drove up to the house where Rachael was staying, a young black man walked out to the mailbox. "Hi Tiger!", said Rachael. Randy's mouth dropped open (as he is a TOTAL golf addict). Now get this...this is how dedicated we are as instructors...Rachael offered to set him with a round of golf with Tiger, but Randy declined, because he was there to work with Rachael, and only had the one day. I know Randy well, and he would have given his left nut to play golf with Tiger! Soon after, Rachael posted the highest finish of any female player in the IPT.

Tom Rossman is a delight. His love of the game is obvious and he's a real easy guy to talk to.
I've never heard of any of the three girls you mentioned.
