pool table question

I've got an 8 foot Connelly table with leather pockets. When I bought it the corner pockets were shimmed. They're funnel shaped now meaning 2 balls will fit in the jaws but as you pull them toward the pocket the pocket gets smaller. Would I need new rails to have an opening that was straight all the way back? Also if I get my corner pockets to just under 2 balls width how wide should my side pockets be? They're about 5 inches wide now.

Thanks Rackem8

The angle or pitch of the rail cushions/facings should not be tampered with. These angles are according to BCA specifications for proper ball pocketing. A professional mechanic can add/subtract shims to increase or decrease overall pocket size. You don't want your cushions to be straight. Everything would go in and it would just pocket balls funny. If your looking to decrease pocket size I would suggest having a reputable mechinic in your area do the job. It should take 2-5 days to complete. There are many techniques used to shim the pockets, some better than others. Its not as easy as it sounds. In order for the balls to be pocketed correctly and not have a funny bounce it takes time and experience. I have been practicing a new way to actually extend the subrail instead of double shimming. This has proven to me to be the best but the most time consuming way to do it. If you can find someone in your area that is willing to do this, you probably will pay top dollar for the labor. This method of extending the subrail was presented to me by Joey in Cali, Ernesto did this to his table. Thanks Joey

Extending the rails is the "professional" way to go. This requires adding wood to the sub-rails at the correct angles and replacing the rail rubber. I suggest doing this when it's time to recover the table.

You may consider going with Accufast or Artemis cushions. Both are cushions that shouldnt need replacing and remains its resiliance. Connelly also has a good cushion called the ICON.

Thanks for the input everybody. I think I'll look into extending my rails. Do the cushions have to be preordered a certain length? Should the side pockets have the same size opening as the corner poekets? Thanks Rackem8
