Here's an example where you want to kill your cueball near the rail. Most people would use low outside to kill the cueball. With more distance on the shot it becomes more touchy and less available.

Using low inside the shot can be hit harder and will kill more with more humidity. As you pull the cueball back to longer distances the shot is still available from near the same angle if you can get enough speed through the cueball to retain some draw. You can slam it and still get the cueball to stop. I call this the Rafael Martinez special. He shoots this all the time at a high percentage.

The same shots show up on the short rails too.

UnknownPro, I'll try your suggestion under different humidity conditions from time to time.

Normally I would have used just low draw with less power (kind of like what Tony Robles suggested: back stroking a shorter distance but still coming forward with an acclerating forward stroke, similar to a "kill shot or stun shot").

Now that you have brought this to my attention I remember observers saying other top players used low inside to "kill" the cue ball. I think Efren was mentioned a time or two. I always thought they were just using low "stun draw" and no real inside spin.

Thinking about it a bit more, I can envision the inside spin being absorbed into a wet rail. I will just have to practice this a bit to see if I can get the same results as what you've described.
