Porper B Set Up Recommendations

Hello! I've been doing cue repairs for the past 8 years on a Mid-American and recently purchased a Porper B lathe. The guy I purchased it from has had it in his garage for a few years as it was passed down from his father. I am cleaning it up & getting it set up for use and everything seems to be working correctly. Are there any known issues to check for during set up or any recommendations on effective modifications?

Thanks, John

Check the power feed. Make sure when you pull and push the big wheel it stops or starts. Just make sure is lubricated and cleaned.

Take extra care with the brass worm gears, it doesn’t take much to strip them.

It's all about proper tension, the seconday gear on the right side under the saddle should be spring loaded to create an idler gear.
That's the way I designed it
It got lost on future models and instead of having the spring. It got tightened to tight!

I’d didn’t take me too long to trash a couple of gears, I bought mine used from a guy by the name of Lee Mada-something, from Wisconsin. It had been well used then, that was 15yrs ago. I just put in a new set of gears the other day. It’s about time for some spindle bearings. Love the machine tho, I have put it to good use.

Those are fun to change.

I’m sure they are, looks like there is going to be a lot of things to move to get to the problem. Any friendly advice?
Nope, you don't have to remove a lot.
DON'T TWIST THE HEAD STOCK BOX!!!!
Take off the Chuck and backing plate.
Then loosen the two bolts keeping the tension on the drive belt, remove the drive pulley and remove it, should be a spacer after that.
Then block the chuck side with a towel,
Fill the spindle with ice and block the hole with another towel.
Wait a bit, the cold will make the spindle shrink a little.
Using a block of wood against the back side of the spindle and tap it out.
DO NOT DAMAGE THE OLD SPINDLE AND FLAIR THE END!
DO NOT REMOVE THE 4 BOLTS holding the bearings in place til the spindle is removed.
When it starts to slide out, you will see two burn marks basically where the spindle sat in the bearings.
Those will be the trouble areas getting the spindle past the bearings.
When all is said and done, that drive pulley is the only real thing holding that spindle in.
Good luck
Merry Christmas

Hey thanks for the info! Merry Christmas to you as well!
I will have take off the external motor that I adapted after the original motor took a crap. The guy prior epoxied a 3 jaw chuck to the back side of the spinal. I’ve got a cue in the production stage, so maybe after I’m done with the build, I’ll see if I can tackle the task. I’m having 3 disc’s in my neck removed in late January & I'm gonna be laid up for about 3 months if all goes well & i would like to get the little wobble out of it. I’m gonna need something to do after the 6-8 week surgery recovery.

On another note, is there a way to beef up the power feed motor with out major surgery?

Bottom pc board in back. Increase the torque to the right.
4 adjustments there.
Speed min and max
Torque and comp.
Leave the comp alone if it's not hesitating when it runs.
