Back when I used to use one, I had the same problem. I ended up grasping the bit with a pair of vise grips and tapping the Vise Grips lightly with a small hammer til it lossened up. I then used a little graphite on the collets and the bore of the router shaft to keep it from happening again.

No offense Adonnis, but....
Yes, because they are so loose and sloppy. Check the runout on one of those and you'll see that I mean. I tried one temporarily on a cnc machine and the runout was so bad that the pockets were huge and the parts small. While this can be compensated for in programming, to a certain extent, it still causes the tiny end mills to break very easily and causes larger than necessary radiuses on inlays. Even the Porter Cable was unacceptable as a CNC spindle, once I had a REAL spindle and realized the difference.

Jammed Collet

To remove a tool from a jammed collet give the collet nut a sharp tap with a piece of brass after loosening the nut. This problem is common with collets that are not fully hardened and precision ground.
Quality collets loosen automatically by continuously loosening the nut until the nut automatically opens collet about 2-4 turns from being tight.

Sherm, Is that Ernie (on the right) in your avatar? Just curious.

No, thats Chris MacDonald, a top player from California. That picture was taken about 20 years ago.
