possible new small room

My partner and i are in the beginning stages of opening a new small pool room in Maryland. The building available is 4,600 square ft. and after looking at building layouts we feel that we can comfortably fit 13 9' gc4 and two bar boxes.
We are stuck at the moment in deciding to pursue a liquor license or not, being that we are in a location with access to a much younger crowd under the legal age to drink. We know that making money in this business more or less comes from food or beverages not as much the tables themselves and being in MD we would have to ask these younger customers to leave in peak hours that we would want to bring them in. for the older crowd we are in an area rich with dock bars and we feel that if we let the younger crowd go for the license we might inevitably lose out any way for the other more popular summertime bars... should we stick to a good pool room for anybody to play or go for the higher revenue and obtain a license any input would be helpful

if you have that kind of room maybe 4 nines 5 eights and 4 7' bar boxes there are guys that like to play mostly nines those would be experienced players or players who want to improve their game and then there are the players that will be your profit who dont play as well and like to make balls on your 8 footers and the bar boxes give that much needed revenue from league play get all of the league play you can and with the mixture of the tables you have gives you the flexibility to have tourneys on whatever size table you want as for alcohol i dont know your laws for youth but beer at least if liqour puts under 21 out that would be your educated guess on which side of the coin your wallet lands

Same Problem

Slysneaky26,

I am attempting to put up a pool hall in a college town. I want to utilize the under 21 crowd because there is no place for them to play within 100 miles.

My solution was to get a room near 4,000sq ft and build a petition where I can place 3-4 tables on the under 21 side. I have no idea if the olcc is going to take the bait, but it was my solution.

It might also be wise to start with the bar and then after 2-3 years, if you are doing well, expand to put another room on the building where it has no access to the bar side and place a few more tables in. Unfortunately, you may have to sell your soul and just kick them out at 7pm or so for a few years. Good luck to you.
