So I have been reading a lot of comments and criticisms about the game of pool not growing. I am far from being a promoter but have been giving this some thought. I checked some of the sites regarding net incomes of casinos and wondering if this may be a direction worth considering. Reports of 10's to 100's of millions a year have been reported with no indication of a decline in profits. Actually now that China is in the act the profits are prospected to increase ten fold.
A problem with the game is that it takes an huge amount of dedication and practice to get good at the game. Otherwise it only leads to frustration. However a person can walk off the streets and jump on any table and bet on cards. Not necessarily well but with some luck may cash in on a few bets. SO they think they won. Probably not going to happen if they did the same in a pool tournament.
Here is a proposition. A similar concept to betting on horses. You don't need to hop on a horse to be part of the action. Yet there is a thrill to winning and competing all the same. Could this be implemented in pool as well? Broadcast the names of the top players. Create some rivalries on public TV. Lord knows the casinos have the equity to back it. I have read that horse racing has taken a back door to online poker and other things. However the concept of betting on a horse is still popular that I can see.
So why can't a calcutta type betting format be set up through out the US. This might be an answer to convincing the casinos to put up some cash. They are in business for profit, not for the love of anything sport related, i recognize that. Business is about cash and that is it. So show them can make some through a new revenue and they might listen.
