Power breaking aiming

I have watched many videos of the pros power breaking and many pre-stroke/aim VERY low on the cb. Here is an example of this. Notice Rob's break...

If he hit where he was aiming the cb would for sure jump off the table and him would most likely rip the cloth. Obviously he dont do either. So...whats going on? Does he know his bad aiming on the final power stroke and expect the cue tip to strike above his aim?

When I break...I try to hit where I aim!

Enquiring minds wanna know.

Chances are he knows that when he lifts his body upwards on the final stroke that the cue is going to lift with it approximately that much and aiming lower is a way of compensating for that.

No clue, really, though.

It must have just been a product of experimentation. It makes sense that if you learn to start on the felt then you should have the same starting position hence a accurate stroke would eliminate another small problem. Sometimes when I break I lose the center of the cueball before I even hit the ball and put unwanted top or bottom. But I am not going to go and try and relearn that way now I mught kill someone haha.

I am not trying to hijack this thread but does anyone have an estimate of how fast I break??? I want to locate a gun or something but haven't really tried. Some local guy told me "maybe like 20mph" I think more but hey I dont know. Here is a video,

Could by any numer of reasons...

  • Helps him set his tip at center CB
  • Gives him a better view for aim
  • creates some butt elevation that creates angle for break power
  • thinks it makes him look cool

This would be my guess. I cue low during the practice strokes on my break, for this exact reason. Otherwise I may end up mis-cuing or putting too much top spin some of the time.

I have seen A LOT of people do this also. The most powerful breaker I've ever seen does this. And I too have no clue because its obvious they are not hittin the cueball that low

Some people really drop their elbow when power breaking, causing the butt of the cue to drop and the tip to raise. Aiming low ensures that when this lift happens the cue ball is struck in the center. If they aimed at center pre-stroke and then raised the tip on the final stroke, they'd probably miscue over the top.

Thanks! That explains why when I line up thinking I'm going to hit the cb dead center, I wind up applying super-follow.

I drop my elbow when breaking, but I do it late in the follow through motion. Some people start the drop very early and the cue tip will rise. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's something you should realize you're doing so you can counteract it by starting out cueing low.

You'll notice some people grip too far back and the butt will drop before the tip gets to the cue ball. Moving the grip hand forward a bit helps keep the cue a little more level as the elbow drops.

Yeap thats what I thought too. I know for me...I was always aiming center..then never stopping or moving the cb back to center table. I got an ez shot ball and didnt some breaks with it to see where I was hitting vs where I was aiming. No matter how hard I tried to hit center ball...I always hit above center. Finally I started to hit lower and I got some control of the cb. My low hits were actually hitting close to center ball. The tick is to be consistent and know how much lower to aim to get the offset required for a center ball hit.
