Power Draw

In the main forum on a Mike Massey power draw. Artistic Billiards players can get insane draw on a ball. I finally got to the point where I can put really hard follow on a ball for force follows and such, but follow isn't chancy, too high and you just miscue. Once you get the gist of it you can just practice harder and more follow through. I can't exactly get a really strong draw. It looks like Massey smashes through the ball at the cloth and bends the cue against the table. I tend to just miscue and hop the ball. Any secrets?

Robert Bryne talks about Massey's draw in one of his books.He says Massey hits at the exact point on the cue ball with 'conviction' in power draws so he can obtain such lively action from the cue ball
As you know ,draw on a cue ball is much more a stroke thing than just hitting 6 o'clock for even simple draws let alone power draws.Sometimes a punchy ,hard stroke may prevent draw happening even you hit 6 o'clock probably due to excess forward momentum.

My suggestion in power draw: 1- don't sacrifice a long follow through in the power draw even though you must hit hard and quick 2-hit with 'conviction' .Put your concentration on the hit.Hit the 6 o'clock exactly without hesitation

I have not watched totally but Caudron shows a power draw though not around a table thing but still shows the technique.He says 'fast but not hard'

That is actually solid advice right there that a lot of people don't fully understand. Whenever I teach someone how to draw a ball and I seem them hitting it really hard, hell, follow balls too, I ask them one question "Can you throw a baseball?" Then I tell them to imagine how they get a lot of distance on a throw. You gotta be loose and fast. Gripping down and muscling the ball defeats the entire purpose. Same thing goes with pool......bowling too. Do not power the cue or the ball. Loose and fast. Down with the power and up with the speed.

Thanks for the Caudron video.

Two observations:

The equipment is perfect. If you have worn cloth, sticky cushions, or dirty balls, you will not get that kind of action no matter how good your technique is.

His follow through on draw strokes is not exaggerated, but it is on follow shots. I think follow through is not as important as an accurate hit.
