Been playin for a few days love the game, people think I'm awsome for a beginner. Question is, is goin to a pool hall and playin solo and settin up shots best way to practice beginner style or getting humiliated in games best? hehe

btw my easies shots are banks and angels I'm terrible at strait on shots

If I were you, I'd practice by myself in a pool hall. I'd also watch the best players in the pool hall to see what I could emulate. After you feel like you're getting better, start playing people a little better than you. Keep it up and you'll get there. Good luck.

Good call FL.

Another one that my wife's teacher showed her when she was starting out was the long, corner-to-corner straight shot across the length of the table.

Sorts the stroke out quickly AND is satisfying as all hell when it goes in.

FL is right...have fun first...no point in beating yourself to a pulp with drills..might turn you off from the game cause it can get quite boring. Watching others play really helps alot though and you'd be surprise wut you can learn by just watching.

dont practice by yourself...of course you could always do some drills, but never play by yourself, it affects your mental concentration and will eventually develop bad habits which will then be difficult to correct in the long run...:)

I strongly disagree. Solo practice is what fine tunes mechanics. Playing under pressure in money matches or tournaments is what fine tunes feel.

Shooting around with your friends and not playing seriously is what develops bad habits.

There'll be so many things that will amaze you while learning the game. Even pros still learn. The important thing is to understand everything that amazes you. Instructions will come along, but nothing beats the curious mind in learning. Try to understand every instruction because there will come a point when you will be your own player as you will start doing things based on your total knowledge in the game. It will also help you keep an open mind to your never-ending, life-long pool lesson.

Welcome to the overwhelming world of pool!

Practice at least as many hours as you spend playing for at least 18 months and even you won't believe how much your game improves.Anything worth doing well is worth practicing diligently.

I find it helpful and interesting to watch players at the womens top pro level or better in small tourneys where you can sit up close.

I find watching players of less skill than that not particularly interesting or helpful because they are not consistantly good enough. If they are not in a tourney or money match they are not playing their best game; and in big tourneys the seats are too far away from the table to observe the fine points of what they are doing.

What i do is i learn more from observing then actually doing. When I play one pocket i learned many things from a close friend of Steve Mizerack I don''t know his last name but we call him Roy. Roy is about 60 by looks and use to be partners with the Miz at Paramus Billiards(i think that was the name) well him and the Miz would play straight up 1 1pocket and it would be a see-saw battle. He tought me so much and jsut by watching him he is amazing and hasnt played seriously for a couple years. Watch people play and you will pick up a lot. then try to do the same thing. If you setup a shot and you make it keep going till you feel really comfortable.

You can really learn a lot by watching other people play. Even Efren watches beginner's to learn some shots. According to him, its from the beginners where he picks up those magical shots that others don't even dream about.
