Practice practice practice

The Joy of the Chalking:
It must be respected and done religious like. With my super hard tip less is more. Definitely don't want cake. Definitely don't want layer cake. Says Rainman.
Definitely Enjoy it, because tomorrow it's "back on your head"

How to do it right:
1. Why are you practicing? What are your goals?
2. Start with the beginning. The foundation or shooting platform.
I think of a dance step as I first find the line of aim, placing my belly button on it. I think Briesath teaches the chin. Possibly better. Then stride onto that line. Placing my body into an orientation to shoot one handed. Practice this for at least a week by completing the shot.
The most stable platform is a tripod. I try for a wide base for stability. Cole took the leg spread to the extreme. I noticed Incardona does much the same. Both known for their shot making. I was taught and espouse to be a shooter first. Think of Quigly Down Under. Snooker players have pretty much a universal stance. With the bridge hand emulating the broadest tripod possible.
This should take another week.
See Barry Stark on YouTube and learn how he teaches the stance. And on thru to the fingers. He teaches object ball last but that’s the only thing I differ with him on. His reasoning is vague to me. I am confident in my choice but will save that for later.
3. Absolutely make sure you are practicing right. Practice forms habits. Bad habits are hard to break. It’s so much easier to have a good solid foundation before adding the ornaments. I started lessons with the piano in the 1950s. An hour lesson each week with one hour practice each day. My daily practice started with the scales. I emulate that with my shot making drill. Which is based on Colin’s shot making drill which I got from Dr Dave(excellent source like my encyclopedia). I have recently modified the drill to include phenolic tip with no chalk. Oh yeah!! I am so happy with what I am learning or relearning.
Second scales drill is based on the snooker based drill I got from uh maybe Scott Lee. Gets into shape precision.
I compete with left hand against the right to emulate competition.
I try execute each dance step precisely thru all things I practice and stay alert for any laziness.
After the scales it’s game competition left against right. I used to give the left a spot but not any more. 3 ball, 9 ball and 8 ball are my favorites.
I try not to go beyond my attention span. Practice that’s fun is much more effective for me 😎😀.
I haven't been able to practice in awhile. Neck surgery, life got in the way.

I have the projection pro billiards projection system.

My "daily" workout 1hr to 2hr workout is:

My projector draws a line from corner too corner, both corners. I practice perfect stop shots. When my stroke is off, I chicken wing it, cue ball goes to the right, object ball misses left. Takes 5 to 10 min then I'm in the "zone".

2nd drill is balls lined up across the middle of table, draw backs shooting into corner pockets.

Then the "yo-yo" drill. Object balls near each second diamond from the corner pockets, make balls on corners, keep drawing or stunning cue back, no forward movement. Don't scratch in side pocket! Endless drill.

Then I have all of Bert kinister's shots loaded but after doing MN Pool Boot camp @Tin Man I've decreased this to about 10 core shots, then I shoot what I feel I need to work on it what I missed that bugged me the days before.

I'm a not very serious APA 7. Just enjoying the game.

Have you tried the Kicks Like A Mule Challenge?
I have utilized similar drills to the ones you relate. I enjoyed them and felt that they did sharpen my game. My greatest achievement in the tournament world came after I had spent a week of, an hour a day, doing kick shots. 3 ball break 'em and kick 'em in. It was the Scott in me. 😉 lots of practice for a quarter.
My Mule Challenge is my choice for Fitness considering the mileage. I feel fit or I throw one? Nah if it don't fit I musta' quit. 🤷‍♂️

Flavor O the Day is :
Short Rails.
I have been favoring the long rail kicks for too long. So today's challenge is...nothing but side rails. Can't wait for the Z+, well Lefty opens with a 9 and closes the station. "Next" is the taunt as the cue is passed.

Now for The Z. The Z was Mike Zimmerman. The name you would see on The White Spot/Right Spot running score sheets that went back at least a year. The Wednesday night $5 nine ball and bi yearly race to 7 on 8 foot tables, was legendary.

Lefty starts the sad part of the story as The Right makes a 5 point shot to take the lead and close the station.

The sliver of cloth visible under the white keeps it from a Max of 10.
Now for the Z+. Whoop E!

Well that's how long it takes to navigate the Challenge. Right snatches the Trophy with an 8 point shot. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the shout out Thresh! I don't remember who you are in real life at the moment, it's hard enough to remember names without user names on top of it!

Anyway, all sounds good. Great practice! I'd like to add in the concept of working on individual layouts, setting the same layout up again and again and working on it until you know the best way to run them, integrating patterns/cue ball/shotmaking. I just recorded a podcast with Josh and will try to get you a copy, but it speaks to that portion of it.

Then of course there should be plenty of time just hitting balls and putting it all together.

Love it, keep me posted!

Good Morning: Definitely a therapy day, Definitely a therapy day.
The rising sun on my back is good for it. The race to get the Challenge-O the day completed before the light reaches the shooting station, provides the closest I can to the urgency often felt in competition. Some call it stage fright. Some call it Buck Fever.
If I have to move the shooting station before completing.......well the Self to Self gets a little snide. 🤷‍♂️

Just watched Ronnie take 10 tries to hit the 4 railer to a red. With each miss on the safe side and a 40 love score. It was 40-36 when he got to sit and rest. So I really enjoy the 4 railers and seeing what slightest adjustments will do. 🤷‍♂️

Scotch Chalking is allowed in emergencies. As long as Lefty and Right? Agree. 😉
The shot is soooo close but not quite. Self to Self, "there's got to be an adjustment I am overlooking......hmmmmm well with chalk application that is on need only program which involves thoughtful application to dark spots only. Giving the computer time to run in the background. Back into the Breach. 😉

Oh Gawd! Was just ready to call it Unobtainium when I missed it long. The Z+. 3 side rails to the 11 in the back on the 5 hole.

Whoop E, Lefty got it. But butt, wait. Only for 3 points. Pluss Lefty got so excited, he forgets how he did it. 🤷‍♂️. Back to it. ☺

Ah! Finally. The solution involved staying center ball and adjusting the angle then velocity.
3 rails and left the 11 in the 5 hole for the game winning 8 point shot. :CONFETTI 🎊

Matt, Chicago!

I would actually be interested in an advanced lesson now.

Send me a message when you can. Let's catch up.

Running patterns is something I need to work on more.

I think I'll give @dr_dave Runout Drill System a try. YouTube Link When I find a level that's a decent challenge I can use the project pro Billiards to mark the locations of the balls and experiment with patterns.

I'll set a target of trying to play patterns that are 80% or greater of success (if possible of course).

As you said Demi, walk down the middle of the street and not on the balance beam.

It's been a while, I have always promoted drdave. His site has provided significant material for my study. Studies in this thread I started experimenting years ago. I am currently trying to reflect where I am and why it makes sense. You know when I have the self to Self, I try to channel Spok. Or is it Spook? Shrug.
I am of the opinion that if a Cadet were to submit to the Basic training of my Kicks Like A Mule Delta Formation program. He would be ready to kick some ass. Well at least heading in the right direction.
A player with all the skills. Still needs to be able to fight.

If it's the bottom of the 9th, the bases are loaded. There's 2 out and the score is tied. You have to want to be the one at the plate.
And of course honorable mention goes to....
