Practice Table Setup Advice Please

Hello all, I am finally getting my table put together tomorrow after a long agonizing month of playing Table Tennis on it. (I built and overlay, not hitting onto the slate) I was curious how to set my corner and side pockets up. I was thinking for the corners, the width of 2 balls should suffice but how about the side pockets, BCA minimum? How do most of you have your tables setup? I want to have this table to have fun with when my friends come over yes, but I want it to improve my game also by challenging myself. Thanks in advance.

Tough question. If your friends are anything like mine, you need bushel baskets for pockets or they will soon become discouraged. It is awfully nice to have a table that the casual player will enjoy (since its hard to always find a good player to match up with at home). I agonized over the question (recently built new house with pool room, and changed tables). I asked 2 pro's what they would recommend, the answer was a single shimmed GCIV, then just use the rubber pocket reducers on days when you need to practice your accuracy. They thought a super tight table was a very bad idea, as it makes it difficult to develop confidence in your power position shots.
Good luck,

P.S. - the width of 2 balls seems too narrow to me unless the pocket drops REALLY close to the cushion tip. Steve Mizerak always said that the ideal tough tournament pockets should be "the width of 2 balls plus a wooden match stick." Of course he could only play a little :) :) .

Just another observation, bushel baskets are NOT the answer - a compromise is better. My friend has an unshimmed GCIV, and the pockets are MONSTROUSLY LARGE - it would drive me crazy to play on it every day, its very difficult to miss, almost like a different game.

If I were you, I'd as Pooltablemechanic Buddha. Send him a PM and I'm sure he'd answer you. He loves talking about tables.

Too Tight?

I think you have something there Willie. I have a barbox in the back of my store (for now) and when we recovered it we shimmed her up. It's tighter than the Diamond Pro at Breakers Billiards that everybody says is 'tight'. Now I find when practicing that often a shot will 'jaw' or just bounce out. I always think, "Damn, that would have gone on a normal table", gets me frustrated to the point of not enjoying practice sometimes. I play because I enjoy the game and like to have fun doing it. Maybe having the pockets too tight is thwarting some of my enjoyment. Just never thought of it like that before. Thanks, Pel
