Practice time-Miz's Idea

I cant get involved with DCP's threads.

Regarding practice time I saw Miz on a show about 20 years ago and here's what he said (as I remember it) was the most effictive practice schedual for him at home:

Play 60-90 minutes max, if you get frustraited sooner stop within a few minutes of being frustraited and come back a few hours later and start fresh. If you dont get frustrated play no more than 90 minutes. Do this 2 or 3 times a day. Mix it up some times run the balls in rotation, drills, play 14.1 play what ever your playing the best that day. this way your never frusrtated when your playing and also your shooting a wide varity of shots. If you cant play good on any given day forget about it, sometimes he continued to say it dosent matter if you dont play for a week as long as you attempt to play daily to see how your hitting them

This is hard to do for people who cant stay home all day but its what Miz said and I have tried it when I could and it was fun,

But I also noticed that if you dont go to a pool room and watch other players better and worse than your speed you dont grow, You get house bound and cant devlop because you dont see other ideas for shape, watching other people address the shot, stroke, etc. So what I did was go to the pool room and see something I liked and took that idea home then used that idea as a basis for practice, you cant learn as much at home by yourself, sure the videos help some but they are focused on the balls and watching the player is as important as the balls if not more important, the balls will just do what they are going to do, players are individual, their rythem, choices etc and that dosent come across on the videos-position play does but you need more than position play to become a player.

also playing other people, action is a great way to improve, watching who your playing, and how their playing not just the balls. It dosent have to be big $$$ action just enough to stop the talking and social BS, just pool.

Take that stuff home and then you'll have something to practice other than shape and you will grow as a player, banging the balls at home countless hours is like walking on a treadmill.

Organized practice at home is great for growing!

The Miz's advice is great and right on. But since the Miz made a tough shot the very first time his Father put a cue in his hand, it probably doesn't matter how much he would practice.

The same goes for George Breedlove. Jeanette's husband is an owner of a construction company and he says he NEVER practics. He probably has the natural hand/eye coordination that cannot be taught.

For the rest of us, practice is the very lifeblood of playing quality pool. Step away from the table for a few days and you'll find some minor deterioration in your "speed" and the precision of your position play. Some guys just can't play unless they have completed the necessary practice.

So, off to practice all you pool room bums! ;)

Yours Truly,
The Woim
