Practice your long shots

Having trouble with long shots? Have you tried practicing playing 14.1 from the kitchen? It's meant for maybe B players and up all the way to the professional level. It's very simple yet very hard. You start off with setting a regular beside the rack break ball. Then you break shooting from the kitchen and play every single shot with a BIH from the kitchen. If an object ball ends up in the kitchen, it is spotted. The subsequent break shots are also played from the kitchen but you will have to choose and leave your break ball without moving it.
How many balls can you run this way? My PB is 21 and I know top players can run a hundred.

This practice is all about secondary break shots and bumping balls nearer the corner pockets away from the foot rail. Everything done from a distance.

Great idea! I'll use that with my students next time, curious to see this in action.

thanks for you post as I started back into 14.1 a few weeks ago and realized that the weakest part of my game was the very subject of your post. 2 weeks ago I started setting up a break ball and shooting only from the jaws of the pocket in the kitchen and after a few days of that I became relativity proficient. it did improve my game as I won my last match (sunday night) 108-38.......I will try your method later today, thanks again.

This was actually fun practice and it did put me on stroke! It did take about 30 min before i started making balls with regularity.
It think i made over 15 run 4 times a row but never got past 20. Tight table.

I think the best part is that all the long shots in a regular 14.1 match play don't look so intimidating after you practice this every now and then. I think running over 20 is already a good feat. I have to work for every single ball. That is actually a good reason I don't recommend practicing this for too long at a time.

Tried this with my students last Wednesday, great fun, thanks again for the suggestion! No one got beyond a rack, but allowed only half an hour in order to see what it's like, as we were preparing for the National Team Cup (yes, we won our bracket and the first K.O. round, quarter final and hopefully farther in two weeks).
