Practice

I’ve read post that some of you’ve made about practice habits to improve your game wether it be 9 ball, one hole, snooker or whatever.

If any of you want to take your game to a higher level practice 14 and 1 for 2-3 months a few times a week.

Place a makeable ball near the rack and pocket the ball and go into the stack with your cue ball but don’t try to break up the whole stack that’s turning your cue ball loose and a bad idea!

You’ll never be an elite player if you can’t control your rock! After 8-10 weeks of practicing 14-1 your nine ball game should be stronger and 8 and outs will be more common in your one hole game just from practicing 14-1 a game most doesn’t want to play but you develop touch with your cue ball and learn to break balls up correctly with precision and this influences all pocket billiards games.

I started practicing 14-1 when I was 16 yrs old so when I played Lassiter and Ronnie Allen in the all around in 1970 I was very familiar with the game and it made me a better all around player!

Practice 3 cushion billiards and develop power in your stroke. Try breaking 9 ball with slightly high English from center table and park your rock at center table, you’ll never scratch doing this and if you make a ball on the break multiple racks will come more often!

Control your cue ball on every break!

On your practice sessions just shoot the cue ball around the table for 20 minutes or so, short rail long rail, one, two rails and three rails, by doing this you learn where to strike a ball with your cue ball to pocket the ball!

This is what I did to become a world class player. I did have an unfair advantage over literally all other players that has ever played due to watching world beaters at LeCue club in downtown Houston when it was arguably the best action poolroom in the world for a few years!

Watched Greg Stevens play weekly along with Jersey Red and Handsome Danny Jones and many others and copied the best part of their games and expanded on it!

I was a complete player before my 18th birthday, of course I skipped school to do that LOL.

14 and one is the best way to up your game right away if you’re already an okay player. If your 14-1 game improves all other games have improved also!

Reading this reminds me of watching Ray Martin playing 9 ball at the Reno Sands in the late '80s. His shot selections as a rule were such that he played short and precise cue ball paths for shape. What I got from it was the value of precision cueball control.
In the latest Stephen Hendry video he emphasized Precision cueball.
Cole Dixon taught me that precision was more important than power in the 9 ball break.
Your thread title Practice got my attention as I have a sandbox thread titled Practice practice practice. My practice has evolved to a fitness program that I call Kicks Like A Mule. It's emphasis is precision.
I agree with 14-1 practice being excellent. I did include it extensively in my earliest practice. I started out with a pamphlet by Mosconi and followed Willie's suggestions. Watching Ray Martin's game and how precision shape made it look effortless and simple.
For me the 14-1 practice was the best way to build a bar table 8 ball game. A game that was deceptively strong, in that it was plain and simple. No big spin or power like so many thought was a way to well, like Meat said in the movie Bull Durham, "Announce my presence with Authority! ".
One of my favorite movies.

Wonderful post and advice. PLEASE keep them coming Keith. You are a treasure to the pool world.

What I like about 14.1 is that it forces you to concentrate, you don’t get bored like other practice routines. If you’re already on a good run you concentrate on every shot, don’t want to start over.
I remember one day, early afternoon, I started a 14.1 session. Soon my wife yells downstairs saying it’s time to get ready to go out for dinner with friends. I said we’re not doing that till this evening. She yelled back, it IS “this evening!” OMG the whole afternoon just flew by!
