Practicing

on one of the classic ESPN shows last week they were talking about how Jeanette would practice 40 hours a week or more. thats 6-10 hours a day folks.

could you guys practice that long? sure wish i had the time to do so, i am sure my game would skyrocket! during the week i am lucky if i get 2-4 hours a day at the table, and possibly 5 hours on sat and sunday.

how much do the rest of you guys spend each day/week practicing? i think starting next week i am going to spend most of my time just practicing. i am going to diagram about 50 shots and keep them in a binder and practice about 10 different shots each night, probably about 15 minutes each. might stick to this regimen for about a month, see if that improves my game.

regards,
DCP

When I was playing pro 9-ball, I would play approximately 3-4 hours per day (after work) and either Saturday or Sunday I would go to the pool room for about 8 hours and practice.

Now that I compete in trick shot competitions, I probably practice every other day about 2 hours. Occasionally I will have a four hour session, but it is rare (maybe once every other week).

This is all with a full time job.

Jeanette's full time job is pool so spending 6-10 hours a day practicing is not unreasonable. Most people spend at least that much time at their regular job each day.

Also, how much you practice is not as important as how you practice. If you throw the balls on the table and just shoot around, that is not practice that will get you anywhere. Try to put yourself in a competitive situation. Anything that will get your concentration going. Play 9-ball against the 'ghost'. Do drills. Whatever works for you. I used to play 9-ball against the 'ghost' and that worked for me. With the trick shots, a lot of the shots are so difficult, that just practicing gets me going -- especially when I record the results -- I am constantly trying to improve my percentages.

In her book Jeanette says she used to practice 16 hours some days. I guess that's why she went from nobody to champion in about 3 years.

I'm lucky to get in 4 hours of practice and 4 hours of play per week anymore.

Just a slight disagreement with Andy

Andy, just knocking around balls CAN be useful, depends on how you do it. For example, my favorite drill is to do just that, except the cb can't touch a rail at any time. Or I have to use at least 1/2/3/4 diamonds of draw/follow on every shot. Or when I am in a silly mood I will play a game using what I call NSA (Needless Amounts of Side). Get that rock whizzing around the table!

Can be cool but I do appreciate what you are saying, practice has to be somewhat structured.

My main practice routine starts with 20 cross side banks, 10 long rail and 10 wide cross corner banks. Then I throw the balls on the table 8-9-10 at a time and play 9 ball. If I stumble onto a shot or safety that is hard or don't feel comfortable, I repeatedly shoot it. I have recently started to practice straight pool to work on combo's and breakouts. It helps with working out patterns and touch shape too. In the early and mid 80's I could go to the pool room and play 10-12 hours easily. Now I have a family and a pool table at home. Sam

Well, i don't practice as much as I would like to. I work a full time job, a part time job, and go to school full time, so inbetween all that I practice. It probably comes out to about three days during the week for about 3 hours, and then on weekends anywhere up to 7-8 hours on and off play. I would love to be able to spend my whole day in the pool hall, just playing, but unfortunately I have bills, and school to pay for!!

Have one of your professors teach you the meaning of a new word, I don't know what it's equivalent would be in Spanish...S-U-G-A-R-D-A-D-D-Y

Good point. Thanks for the follow-up on my comments. They make sense, especially if they work for you. After all, that is the most important thing.

Thanks

Andy

9balldiva posted her picture a while back and any girl that cute who plays pool should be able to find a sugardaddy with no problem :)

I think the "ghost" is a great thing for practicing alone; a lot of players simply can't concentrate enough when they're not playing someone else. This drill makes you really focus and think about your runouts instead of rolling out balls and absentmindedly shooting them.

I saw the pictures and wholeheartedly agree. But is it in her and is she smart enough to play someone for that end result? There's another word that might be interchanged with sugardaddy, could have similar meanings....

From what I've seen of diva's postings, I don't think have a sugardaddy would fit with her personality. She strikes me as one independent young lady, regardless of her ability to procure a sugardaddy. JMHO.

She's already admitted to having a boyfriend, so she's not THAT independent. Her choice on this one apparently didn't include "rich and giving" as a primary criteria. Youth tends to lend itself to idealism...love (aaaaaaah), looks, fellow pool player, good dancer, popularity, and all that good stuff. I've seen thousands of women with good looks play it otherwise as the years go on when they get tired of their independent stage and don't care to prove anything any longer. Sure wish I was able to do it, don't you?
