Pre flag Masters Chalk

Actually, I play pretty much exclusively with Pre-flag, mostly because I have tons of it, and I guess I am one of those stupid guys that think there is a difference. I was told that the older formula had lead in it, and there was cause to remove it.

I do think the GREEN Masters chalk adheres better to the tip than the normal BLUE, either preflag or postflag.

Should I start a new thread? I definitely think that something is different in the green. It seems "creamer" if that makes sense.

Ken

If you are talking about the light green Masters I completely agree. I have some and for lack of a better description it seems "softer" or "not as dry" as the blue Master.

There is definitely a difference between blue and green. Like you and.ken said....green is softer ...or creamier. It definitely goes on the tip easier and adheres better

Couldn't an independent chemist put this to rest in a hurry?

Does chalk go bad? If so, what causes it to go bad? Age? Temperature? Humidity? All the above?
I know a chemistry student who, for a senior project, analyzed the formulation in numerous types of chalk including Masters and Pre-flag Masters. The only difference between the Masters was that the Pre-flag had a grit material that was actually harder than the grit material in the current Masters. And there is no lead in the Pre-flag.

I played someone on Monday that brought Pre-Flag with him. I had my normal Master chalk. He's just using it because he bought a gross some time ago. We both had our chalk on the table.

Every time I happened to pick up his I knew it immediately. It was much harder and didn't make as much of a mess as the new stuff. Sort of brought back some memories, actually, because it really was a pretty big difference.

It's just one data point, but the difference was clear and unmistakable. I don't think it really makes a whole lot of difference performance wise either way and I wouldn't spend money looking for pre-flag chalk, but it was definitely different. Maybe it was just old and very dry? I don't think so.

I kind of like Magic Chalk these days, just for the record. It's very clean and lasts a long time, so it ends up costing about the same as Master and makes less of a mess.

I'm stocking up on pre-flag Magic Chalk.

It's already the "best chalk of the world" so I don't want flags messing it up ;)

Speaking of colors, I think the red stains more than the blue. Maybe it's just darker/more noticible, but I feel like every time I use red chalk it gets everywhere. I think it's something in the dye.

Yep, I've already stored several dozen boxes. So, in 15 years or so, I will be selling the old chalk, because it was made near the old Chernobyl Nuclear Plant. Plus, it glows in the dark as a bonus ;)

I've got a gross just sitting there doing nothing.
