Majors....
Best three outta five sets.
All Tennis majors are the same.
was watching SVB/Yapp.

Thx Predator for finally getting this Format right, hope MR will do the same with 9.
Good for all, 2-3 hrs of play with all it's ups/downs. Sweet
Gives the audience a very enjoyable feel of players ups/downs and greatness.

True, but the rest is ''great''.
Win by two works.
Might keep the vendors there an improve alcohol sales. :)

The pockets appeared to be 4 1/8''.... or 4 1/16th. That's good, players can let their stroke out ''swing it'' a little more, aggressive rotation play.

I very much disliked the 2 out of 3 races in sets in the earlier rounds. Too short and it led to too many upsets.

The 3 of five format is much better. I enjoy it.

I would not want to see MR adopt sets, however. At least not anytime soon. I like the current format for the major WNT events.

In tennis you get the same amount of shots at the ball as your opponent.

In pool you watch the game from a chair and feel lucky if you get to stand up.
Yes, besides axing the shootout, one possible improvement would be making it alternate break. Although one of the commentators said that only three people have run out a set so far in the history of the format. No clue whether or not that's true, but it's believable with the tight pockets and no template rack.

Ultimately, the comparison to tennis is apt. And with each race only going to 4 every rack feels more important. And then with the score reset each set, even if someone loses 4-0 or some such then they are right back in it the next set. Keeps the audience engaged more. I can see why they did it and agree it might actually be the better format for spectators (again, shootout aside).

Me too, but races to 9 and 8 are too short when your flying 1/2 around to planet.
ESPECIALLY With winner breaks that's too short a race.
Watching the HOF players come from the losers side US Open Chesapeake VA and win it, never woulda happened much races to 9 or 8.
I won't drive 600 miles races to 7....9 ball on a box.
But I will if the races R to 9 or more.

I like the format except for the shootout. Might as well crown a champion with a trick shot contest. No defense, no strategy in the shootout except who makes a spot shot. Ridiculous.
The World Cup of Soccer can be decided on a shootout. I am not a soccer fan so I don't know if this has ever happened before but I do know some big time soccer games have. The shootout in soccer, and even hockey, is one of the most exciting parts of the game, or so I am told by friends who follow both sports. The shootout might be popular outside of the US where Soccer is popular. It is something they already know and enjoy. Not saying I am a fan of the shootout though. However, I can only imagine the amount of pressure being on that versus just doing a spot shot drill by yourself.

three world cup finals that i can remember, including the last one. most famously (imo) 1994 when italy's superstar roberto baggio missed the goal by a mile.

Too short? The first stage of the 10 ball tourney only required players to win 8 games in two sets. (Winner break, with alternating between sets, methinks.)

The first round of WNT majors should be a gimme for the top seeded players. In most cases, the second round matchup as well. You still have to lose two matches, a race to 9 and a race to either 8 or 9, to be ousted.

The only top players who get in trouble are those who lose to players early on who far lower in rankings and/or Fargo.

In the U.S. Open, the only top 30 players to get ousted before the knockout stage were SVB, Mario He, Kledio Kaci, Skyler Woodward and David Alcaide.

Tennis and Bowling are decided the same way. The matches have to end eventually and after two hours of play if no ones got the win then why not have skills test?
