In the TAR 28 podcast, John Schmidt mentioned that he was the house pro somewhere (I forget whether he actually said where). Then there's a thread about a visit to Johnny Archer's pool room.

I thought it would be cool to start a thread about what pro players are house pros where. Please add as many as you can. Here's the first one.......

Being a House Pro is one time not a big deal, as many years ago in CA where I was growing up the Pool Room's House Pro was simply a gofer for the room owner, who let him play, practice, and teach pool in exchange for cleaning the table, bathroom, and other duties. Think the room own took pity on the guy occasionally and fed him a hot dog & cold drink.

Don't think the guy ever owned anything but a Pool Cue, and old junker car if memory serve me correctly. It was rumored he slept in the pool room after hours.

I recall asking him once when he did not get a job at Lockheed, or one of the other factories in the City. As anyone with a pulse could get hire in entry level position, and make fair money for the time. He was hooked on Pool, and laughed when I ask that question.

I would say the guy was a sub short stop player, but still played very well. He would gamble with customers who thought they could whip the guy who won most of the time. He even gave a few lessons, than one day disappeared, and we wonder where he went.

Upon his return about 90 days later looking like hell, as apparently a couple of traffic ticket he did not pay made in a guest of the County were lets say he lost a lot of weight from good old LA County Jail Food.

Did not seem like a very exciting life, and when the Pool Room closed years later the guy was without a place to sleep.
