problem with a tip on a Predator LD shaft

I put a Moori tip on a Predator LD shaft and it had an afterclick when striking the cue ball.
It sounded like the tip had an airhole or some such thing.
Curiously the afterclick does not occur when the cueball is struck firmly. Only when it is hit softly.
So I replaced the tip and the same aftersound was there.
Do you think the problem lies with the ferrule?
Question is can I use any particular ferrule stock or does the Prredator require a special ferrule.
Any suggestions or input would be appreciated.

I made the mistake of having a repairman put a new ferrule on my Z2 shaft once.......he had never worked on any LD shaft before. He was Turing down the ferrule to take it off and the next thing we know the whole end of my cue is laying on his table. They are hollow and filled with "foam". He made a tenon and filled the tip with epoxy and put me a new ferrule on and somewhat fixed it.

Short answer.......let someone fix it that knows what they are doing.
 
I'm assuming it didn't click before you replaced the tip?

The last tip I was going to do on a Predator I gave back to my customer. The end was littered with hairline cracks. I told him to send it back to Predator.

There aren't many authorized repair shops for Predator warranty work and they don't have any plans of allowing more.

I've never done a ferrule on Predator, so I can't comment on that. What I can say for sure is once someone starts messing with it, you have no warranty..

It IS possible your installation on 2 tips in a row was faulty... clicking is usually caused by air pockets created when there is glue starvation between the tip and the ferrule...

I wouldn't mess with a ferrule on a shaft that didn't click BEFORE a tip change. I have had a few tips come off. They all clicked before total failure....

There are at least several causes for the issue you describe.
Let's start with the tip, Moori you say. Mooris are notorious for wicking-up glue resulting in a 'dry-bond'.
Predator ferrules have been known to come loose on occasion. Given my position, I see a few.
There is a 5" hollow at the front-end of the shaft and no, it's not filled with foam.
Otherwise it wouldn't be a hollow.
There is a 1/8" thick slice of hard foam that sits at the entrance to the hollow.
It's purpose is to prevent debris from entering the hollow and rattling/buzzing from within.
I've seen instances where a small portion of the foam disc has broken away into the hollow and created a buzz.
Not the good kind either. Quite ironic heh? The mtrl used to prevent debris is providing it.

I'm going to advice that you or your client send the shaft to a Predator Repair station and have it serviced correctly.
The cost for the service provided is minimal and may even be covered by warranty.
Anyone providing service to this degree who is not authorized and not using Predator replacement parts
will likely void said warranty. I don't make the rules, I just try to abide by them.

Listen to KJ.....I just got my personal predator shaft back from him and he replaced the ferrule under warranty....work is top notch! The guy knows what he is doing.

Is there any separation in the layers of the tip? If the 2 layer or lower looks like its different from the rest I would sharpen the blade you use to cut the tips down.....

A dull blade will heat the tip up as well as rip the leather instead of cutting it and debond the glue that is used to hold the layers in place.

I would try a non layered tip like lepro and see if it continues to do it with a sharp blade or cutting tool.....if it still occurs I would say its a ferrule problem.
 
Hello all. It is actually a problem with my Predator Z2 shaft that weegee3 is inquiring about. If the problem is with the ferrule due to it being cut down a bit during the tip installation, are there any ways to fix this without replacing the ferrule? For example, using some white filler epoxy or putty and then adding a small layer of ferrule stock to the end and then reshape with the lathe. I do not believe that there is a gap between the ferrule itself and the shaft. I could be wrong but the shaft is fairly new. About 6 months old. If it is a problem with the ferrule, I'll have to send it back to Predator to be re-ferruled and tipped.

Why after only 6 months old is the ferrule cut down that much?

And no you cannot glue something else to the ferrule and machine it down it most likely will not hold..... Best off sending it to predator and replacing the ferrule
