Problem with IPT TV Coverage

Still crazy after all these years

So I just finished watching the IPT World 8-Ball Championship match on TV. I was flipping between channels watching football and there it was on NBC. I found it interesting pool, but now understand the comments about Kevin Trudeau in the announcers booth:( . Now to the problem. After the match I went to the TV listings to see how I had missed the coverage. It turns out the program was listed as a "PAID PROGRAM". This is what all infomercials get listed as, and I feel this is not an ideal situation. If future IPT broadcasts are listed as PAID PROGRAMS (which I suspect they all will be, Deno ? I asked this before but do not believe that you answered), most people will have one heck of a problem finding the time and channel using conventional methods (print media TV listings).

A second point, the advertising. In the broadcast I saw there were two commercials, one for Natural Cures book, and the other for Sigel DVDs. I wonder if they will be running the same ad when they broadcast the Sigel-Reyes final. My point ? Who's going to buy DVDs by a guy who is getting absolutely blasted on the pool table. People want to buy DVDs from winners, not huge loosers.

Please folks, recognise that these comments are my opinions on how the general public will view things, not the pool fanatics like those who read AZBilliards. As the IPT has stated, the target audience is the masses.

The reason the broadcast is listed as a paid program is because Kevin is paying to have the tournament put on the air, rather then having networks and sponsors absorb the cost of air time. The hope is that networks will eventually want to carry the broadcasts as part of their schedule. If it wasnt for this being a paid program, you wouldn't see it.

I do hope they yank Kevin from the announcing booth in the future.

Edited to say: the show is not a paid program on all networks, on FSN it was regular programming.

It's on in Orlando right now!!!

Lessee, you watched it on NBC earlier today, I'm watching it on WB in Orlando RIGHT NOW!

I gotta tell you - I don't see much wrong with that!

Also, two weeks ago when my neighbors learned I had a pool table, they told me that they just saw pool on TV earlier that week - it was some man playing some woman. They've never seen pool on TV before. Sounds like a ton more coverage so far.

Better be careful Dave, there seems to be alot of Sigel fans around here that are a little sensitive after seeing him get thumped by Efren.

Thanks for your concern sniperman, but I'm not worried. I doubt that any Sigel fans will brave the cold to come get me.

I am a big Sigel fan, but no, not sensitive about him getting drummed by Efren. I think it was pretty much what we all expected. Efren has been playing in tournaments constantly while Mike has been practicing. Nothing wrong with practice, but Efren was going to be hard to beat by anyone, much less by someone who had been out of the competitive arena for so long and had some "ring rust".

I was just happy to go to pool rooms and FOR ONCE, hear people talking about a tournament. I played in a tournament in Arkansas on Saturday and everyone was talking about IPT, wondering if anyone had any updates, etc.

Honestly, I don't care who gets beat or who wins, as long as it's starting a buzz among poolplayers and the target home audience... and it is, at least in this part of the world.

Bob

I have to say that most of the older players were rooting for Sigel.I thought he was going to lose because Efren was playing in other matches to get to the finals where Sigel just practiced. He looked pretty good in practice running rack after rack but just didn't have the game when it counted the most.
I heard Lorree Jon saying in the last event that she was so excited to be playing Sigel for all that money that she left her game home. She said she would love a shot at a rematch.Sigel said the same about a rematch with Efren.

You even see it in a Double elimination tournament. The winner of the loser side is in dead punch and knocks off the guy sitting waiting to play. I don't see Sigel putting in what it would take for him to be successful, you can't fake it you have to put in the time. I would like to see him do it though for one year at least and see what he still has. I saw him play many times when he was young, I even played him on a bar table and there have been few that could have touched him, he is still young enough and could do it if he has the interest..

Sigel was doing alot of work in the background publicizing the event and I am sure that by the time he got to the championship table he was dead tired.

I waited two weeks to watch the ONLY airing in my area, which was supposed to be Dec. 3rd at 2pm. It also listed it as "paid programming". When the time came the show was selling some kind of oven (infomercial). I was bummed :(. Now I have to wait another two weeks to possibly get disappointed again.
