Production cues?

It is a cue that is made in a factory-like production setting. Generally it means that the specs on the cue are pre-determined by the factory and only things like wrap, tip, color and weight can be changed at little to no extra cost.
Semi-production would denote a cue maker whose cues are all the same specs but that they will do more customizing than a production shop. Custom would mean that the cue maker would be willing to change just about anything you want within reason. Most small cue makers fall between semi-production and full custom.

I have a Universal Smart shaft on the butt from a $30 Players cue.
Would the shaft on a custom cue necessarily be any better?
If not, would it be worthwhile having a custom butt made for the USS?
Playability is my only concern- not aesthetics.

I think that every person on Earth has a different idea of what playability or "hit" is.
Some cuemakers will swear on Herman Rambow's grave that the butt makes a difference in the hit and others (mainly those who sell "performance" shafts) will swear on Mosconi's book that it's all in the shaft.
I think it's the total package and it's whatever package feels good to you.
I do think that you won't play as good with say a Ramin Wood K-Mart special as you will with a conventional cue but once you get beyond a certain set of specs on cues then it becomes mental and how you feel ABOUT what you are playing with factors into how well you do with it.
This really has nothing at all to do with what is a production cue. BUT let's say that you are completely happy with you Universal Shaft and how it feels but the handle feels very heavy in your hands and fat. You might be more comfortable finding a slimmer butt that is balanced a little farther forward. And if no production outfit offered that then you would need to find a custom cue maker to build it to your specifications.
