profoundly stupid question

I have to chuckle, as my current table was found listed in the classifieds as a free pool table. It was purchased for the kids and once they left the parents home it was just in the way. It was in rough shape and reminded me of the college fraternity partying.

Why should that be a burden for a young lady or man to set a good example? I remind my son every time I drop him off somewhere to be a leader not a follower. Peer pressure is a bitch and kids make mistakes, but in the end we’re raising adults not children.

Not a bad idea... also... maybe you can learn to replace the cloth yourself. You will not need Simonis. You'll have all the technical support you need from members here.

As for kids or anyone playing on my table.... I like to work with them first. I had/have people say they are uncomfortable playing..they do not want to damage the cloth... I explain we'll go over stroke mechanics...keeping the cue level, no jumping, golfing, etc. It is proper to go over etiquette, rules, guidelines, etc.

Rank has it's privileges.......it also has it's responsibility. Table access is a revocable privilege. 🤷‍♂️ Amazing how a 5 year old can absorb, just like a sponge. When you act like an adult you can hang with the adults. That's a privilege.
My 5 year old daughter and I had a heart to heart as I held her in my arms and explained to her why I was in charge. She was in the middle of the adult gathering in the pool table er uh recreational room. Of course in the beginning she was mid room in her underwear and balking at doning er uh putting on her night gown as it was HER bedtime. She was putting me to the test, so I gently scooped her up and we went for a walk with her siren protests into the dark of the night. We went for a walk to talk 🤷‍♂️ The flower child mode. 🤷‍♂️ It didn't take long for the wailing and sobbing to subside. She calmly asked, "Dad where are we going?" Well it gets fuzzy from there but we did come to an understanding. She has grown well and strong.
Gotta resist the temptation to Brag on Her. She has undertaken the difficulty of of "The System " in the regimented education system and federal requirements.

The sort of wrist action can add significant velocity to the cue tip at impact. That's how some of the best get the CRACK!!! Sound with a smooth effortless delivery. The Little Girl with the Big break award in my history could go to a few. I did get my ass kicked by a little girl more than once.
 
Of course let them play, and be happy about it. My kids have had the luxury of growing up w/a pool table in the house, but have no interest and can't be bothered to go anywhere near it. WTF is up with that? I blame the parents.

Really? It's a pool table, everything that will get damaged by kids is easily repairable.

Your kid is two years from driving. If you didn't trust get and her friends on a damn pool table, how are you going to handle putting her on public roads in a guided missile? Are you going to forbid her from riding in friends cars? Would you believe you could enforce that ban?

Again, it's a pool table. Just a pool table. Nothing more than a pool table that can be repaired, but is made to hold up in a commercial environment.

Your kid, on the other hand, is a being on the verge of transitioning into an adult person. She is more valuable than any pool table ever made.

You do you, but it saddens me that there are people who are raising humans they will release into society who apparently can't be trusted with a damn pool table.

I didn't put my 16 year old into a car unsupervised for the first time.

And while we left her home without a babysitter for relatively short periods at 14, she wasn't allowed friends over at that age when she was alone either.
 
Okay, Suzy O'Connor from Bellingham beat me in the White Spot race to 7 nine ball event, just 6 months after I finish second to Jim Ward.
Oh yeah, now I remember it was my victory over her husband in that event that launched me. My first match on Saturday.
She missed one ball and that's THE GAME that I won. 7-1 !!!

??!!?? the worst they can do (if they are not gorillas) is to ruin the cloth ONE TIME (you won't let that happen agian do you?). How can you think it will be cheaper in the long run?
 
Let them play...set down the rules. A rule I strictly enforced when my kids had friends over, all balls stay on the table. I have a tile floor on concrete; can't miss the sound of a ball bouncing on the floor. They get one warning when a ball hits the floor. Second ball to bounce the cover goes on the table.
Another rule I enforced, hitting whitey as hard as you can isn't necessary...again one warning. When I'm upstairs and hear a loud crack of the balls and an instant later a ball hitting the back of the pocket...cover goes on the table.
 
Free pool tables can be found then the refurbish and transportation costs considered. The ability to move and install safely is a skill.
I recall the disbelief when I showed up with car hauler trailer......Alone. 🤷‍♂️ They showed me where the table was and I showed them how I could load it alone and with No dis assembly.
Tools of the trade. Shrug 🤷‍♂️ I did purchase a set of 4 furniture moving 4 wheel trucks . The winch on the car hauler made it easy. Well for a pro.
And there you go. My refurbish included recyclable used cloth so around a hundred dollars in pocket liners and rubber and glue for the rails.

And oh yeah the shelf paper in white and black marble.
The ball return lined with recyclable carpet helps preserve the ball set. Pocket liners installed with brads will chip balls. I have seen it but avoided it by employing hot melt glue.

And the rubber sheets found at Ace Hardware provides the transit to the subway carpet lined tracks. Even installed carpet drapes that gently brush the balls as they pass beneath.

As I mentioned, she is an awesome child, and better than most 14 year olds I know, but I wouldn't want her driving on the road by herself at 14, either. She's worth more than a 1000 pool tables, but that doesn't mean I don't want to take care of my stuff and keep it the way I want to keep it. Guess that's why I posed the question. I see both sides of it. Your point is solid. It's just a pool table.

Reply..It's only a pool table. It's only fine furniture. It's only $750 or better to re-cloth. It's only a lot of aggravation finding a 1st class Diamond (or any) mechanic. Growing up my friends had cheap K-Mart and JC Higgins 7-8 ft tables. We loved them. Any table was great table. Buy a beater or Valley for the gang... Let them learn, have fun, socialize, etc. I think you are very on track. Myself... nobody uses my "dear to me"cues, My LP turntable,, tools, cars. They are not toys. They are special to me. And I do not touch anyones' property without be invited. I never approached anyone's table until they said go hit some. Or walked up and handled their music collection/equipment.
