How about once a year, everyone do something [local] to help promote the game of pool in your area.

-Maybe send a list of local pool tournaments to you local newspaper(s) - sports editor. (Description of type of tournament, fee, name of pool hall, address, day of week, time.)

-Offer a day of free instruction somewhere - Send press releases about event.
How to write a press release...

-Make up a list of local tournaments and post on bulletin boards. (Description of type of tournament, fee, name of pool hall, address, day of week, time.)

-Maybe send local pool league information to local newspaper(s).

-Other?

Great idea, Billy Bob. Who knows what can happen from any one action?

I'll do something...look for a PM from me.

This Might Help & It Sure Can't Hurt!

I have always thought it weird that (what in the past) was the largest participant sport in the U.S. NEVER got ANY press in any major newspaper. IF on any given day, the major newspapers (nationwide) were to get multiple requests for information, it MIGHT have some effect. (IMHO)

I contact sports editor ...

I email our sports editor for the paper here every now and then...

If fact, I just did this morning about the WPC and Gabe Owen,
who was born and raised here in Wichita, Ks (Tulsa adopted him).

I asked them to print about the tournament, about Gabe (who made
it to the final 64), and the rest of the American Players.

So far, they have only printed up a story 1 time about a tournament,
and mostly just about Gabe.

Wow, Scott...I can't believe they did even that. Good job.

I used to be involved in press releases for a local political organization around here. They were rarely printed. I've read that one has to first get to know the editor and schmooze him/her in person. Then the requests to print stuff are more likely fulfilled. That seems to make sense.

I know that a well written letter to the editor can get published. It can't be too long or too preachy and has to show some community interest by making a specific point. Perhaps tying it to the anti-smoking laws or pub hours or juvenile activities---something locally specific that goes along with pool helps.

How about doing just something as simple as asking a friend to go play pool today? Choose someone who usually doesn't play and introduce them to the pool hall and a few people. Who knows, maybe s/he'll become a participant and/or spectator. The worst that could happen is they'll say "no." That's what effectively happens anyway if you don't ever ask 'em to play.

Anybody have any stories they'd like to share as to something simple you've done in the past that helped pool?

Well I was looking for wekly tournaments to go to in other areas (than where I usually play). I looked at the listing in our regional billiards publication. Almost every place I went to no longer had a tournament or the dates/times had changed.

So I proceeded to ask around, about where the tournaments currently were being held. Got days, times, address, phone, fees, game, etc.

Then I sent the updated list to the regional publication. They wrote me back and thanked me for taking the time to notify them of the changes. Then they updated the list in their publication.

Note that some of these regional billiards publications cover several different states. They don't know a weekly tournament is no longer being held or about new weekly tournaments unless someone tells them...

nice job
I am looking to start a smaller version of what you probably looked at (OTW).
I am in SoCal and it is needed. I have a little different view of what I would like to see in it but local tournaments is definitely one. There are tons of local
weekly and monthly events that occur with not many ever knowing about it.
I really like the regional billiard publications. Its nice to read about local
places and events no matter how big or small they are.

How about everyone post what they did to keep the thread going and share the ideas with others. I bet we will come up with some things that will work over and over. BUT the criteria is to DO SOMETHING and then post what you did.

John,
Every time the APA holds their city tournament in town, I call the local tv stations and give them the dates and location, explain how this is a local tournament to send teams from Charlotte to the national championships. Maybe one day, they will actually cover it. You've been there...the rows and rows of tables with hundreds of players would make for some great video footage, which is what local tv news seems to like.
