We received this email from a student at Cherry Creek School in Colorado (yeah, the stoney state). The email speak for itself. I'm sure a 6th grader knows what "manslaughter" is much less understands any of what is in this email.
How do you combat this ignorance when it's being taught in our schools? Better yet, why are tax dollars funding obvious agendas filled with incorrect information?
Here is the email:
To whom it may concern:
Hello my name is Haley XXXXXXXX, I am a 6th grader at West Middle School, I have studied elephants extensively for the past couple of months. I believe that killing elephants for their tusks is as bad as manslaughter. They are so important to our ecosystem. Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect? That is what will happen to all animals in South Africa. Killing these elephants will kill out tons of other creatures, About two decades ago, elephants were crowned with the title of ‘animal with the most breeds’. Now, there are only two variations of elephants left in the world. Research shows that elephants will become extinct in less than 10 years. Cute little carvings made out of elephant ivory are not worth an elephant's life.
Elephants have amazing memory they can remember everything that has ever happened to them including their family members dying. Elephants can die from depression, so that elephant tusk you sold today could have killed thousands of elephants not just one. The reason everyone kills elephants is because they want elephant ivory. Your website says “We condemn the illegal slaughter of elephants and support practical efforts to stop elephant poaching and trade in illegal ivory.” If you really wanted elephants to stop getting poached then why sell their tusks everyday?
Killing one elephant is killing dozens of wildlife. Do you really want to be the cause of the butterfly effect? Cause thats what will happen. http://www.theguardian.com says that “It is currently estimated that there are between 410,000 and 650,000 elephant left in Africa, representing more than a 50% decline in the last 35 years. But some key populations have not been surveyed for 10 years, and in some places, numbers are completely unknown” At the beginning of 1980s there were over a million elephants roaming Africa, don’t cause the butterfly effect.
The butterfly effect will happen at some point but by killing these innocent creatures and selling their tusks you are making the butterfly effect come faster and faster. The next time you sell an elephant tusk think to yourself is a cute little artifact worth a life?
Sincerely,
Haley XXXXXXXX
