Pros and Cons: Forward, center, back (butt heavy) balanced cues

What are the differences as far as advantages and disadvantages of each balance type (forward, center, back)? Every cue has a balance point found by balancing the cue on a finger, but how about the overall balance of a cue? Is it a personal preference or is there more to it?

One way to look at it.

I like but heavy cues because I grew playing with house cues, Dufferin's. So on those rare occasions that I don't have a cue with me I can play off the wall, especially if they have Duff's with a decent tip.

I prefer forward balance. I don't know if it makes for better play. I get a feeling of the weight of cue in my hand that just feels right to me. It happens with my Barnhart and an older Schon, both forward balanced.

I think it is all a comfort thing. All shots should be equally possible with a forward or rear balanced cue. Dennis Dieckman used to have some interesting theories about balance on his website, that rear balance was better for 3 cushion billiards and forward balance was preferable for pocket billiards, but it looks like his site is no longer available. I prefer neutrally balanced cues myself. I don't want it to feel rear or forward balanced, just right in the middle.

You can get along with any good cue.
Front balanced....hold it shorter
Back balanced....hold it longer

Sometimes I've had front-balanced bankrolls...
...'cause I didn't hold them long.:crying:

classic 18.5 from butt.....personal preference....

but if i have to pick forward or rear i'd rather the forward balance

Does the balance really make that big of a difference? Every time you change the location of your rear hand it will make the balance point feel different. My rear hand placement is determined by my bridge length which is determined by the type of shot Im shooting, location of my bridge hand in relation to the cushions and other balls etc...I also move my rear hand forward on the break.

I know it makes a difference. My old 1980's cue (butt heavy) feels different than my new 2016 cue (center-forward balanced).

I don't think any is inherently better, they just feel different and some people may prefer the feel of one over the other and even play better with one or the other based on what makes them feel comfortable with their stroke.

I know guys who like back heavy cues, neutral cues, and forward balance so the preferences run the gamut.

I'm a forward balance guy myself. Had played with a very butt heavy Viking to start with and the second I picked up a forward balance cue I instantly liked it better. My current cue is around 19.5" with my playing shaft on...just right for me.

i just find that neutral and forward balance helps toaid in delivery, the other "feels" like it holds the stroke back to me.....just personal observation

A wee bit forward.

I prefer a very slight weight forward feel, and I mean slight. I shot a game with a friends cue and it was really butt heavy and felt weird to me.

Like many things one should shoot with what feels best. We humans are the most adaptable species on this planet. We can adapt to almost any thing and make it work.

It is why we are at the top of the food chain!
