prototype cloth puller

I came up with this idea to easily stretch cloth. In pic i have a piece of square fence tubing and carpet edging with nails sticking out. This way you can pull a whole side together right on your index and easily clamp before stapling. Has this ever been thought of before? Or am i on to something here? :)

I think it might be hard to get the wrinkles stretched at the same index as the rest of the cloth that way. You kind of have to play with the weave of the cloth while stretching. It might work great though. Have you stretched any tables with it? Any pics of how they turn out? I'm interested to see it in action.
 
To properly index, you must at least start your pull in both directions. I'm not sure how you'll stretch in more than one direction with that.
 
Sometimes its hard enough to stretch a handful of cloth that's 4" wide...much more difficult to stretch a 40"-48" width of fabric I would imagine.
...good idea in theory though

No i haven't actually gotten further than what i show in pic.The trouble im having is the stretch from end of pole to other end and keeping weaves straight. I need something like a feather strip type clamp rather than the teeth on the carpet edge i think. Not sure bye the time i set it all up before any staples go in, i maybe quicker just stapling the regular way lol. will keep you guys updated if i come up with something simple and quick

yes this has crossed my mind.But also if u do manage to stretch whole lot and get the pole pushed under the slate, it would be very easy to hold as the slate taking most of the load while u simply clamp in place.

the idea was to pull side to side along pole but havent figured out an easy mthod to hold in place yet. im sure there is something simple. any ideas what i could use instead of carper edging?feather strip perhaps

you could use a wooden pole and cut a groove down it, then use a feather strip. Stretch the cloth from middle out to each end like covering a rail.

hi mate. It would only be used for the 3 pulling sides. I am thinking of buying them clips used for pulling tarps tight etc.have them maybe every few inches attached to metal or timber 4x2 maybe. the 2 clips at edge pull the cloth tight along the timber and the clips in center holding the cloth straight then pull down the timber under the slate and 2 clamps to hold while staple. It may seem a little crazy and most people would think. bye the time you set all that up it could have just been stapled. Might be time consuming to get it all right but could be quicker in the end and certainly easier. I was also thinking of some way of making a contraption to pull it easily all at once. While im here mate. Not sure if you familiar with Strachan 6811 napped cloth. It seems much stretchier side to side than length ways. How would you calculate pull index on this? Ive been going just under 40mm on all 3 rails as i really struggle to pull last stretch on short rail.

Back off slightly on the side to side, then end to end as well. But make sure you're stretching it real good from side pocket to corner pocket before you make any adjustments.
