Greetings to all! I'm in the market for a new break stick. (break only, not a j/b combo) I hear and see a lot about using purpleheart shafts for breaking. I know its the indian not the arrow, but an indian can do better with better equiptment. Thoughts and experience using them? Pros n cons vs a standard maple break taper shaft?

I have a purpleheart shaft that I bought here on AZB on a lark to try as a dedicated breaker. I paired it to an old butt that I had (purpleheart into curly maple, double spliced). The shaft was allegedly made by Gilbert and supposedly came with a Samsara break tip, which is still on it today. Had it for going on 2 years now and I really like it a lot. In fact, a lot of players I know were curious about it and asked to try it out and they love it too, and I've got a number of offers to buy it.

I know that you're not looking for a jump break combo, but you'll likely get just that if you pair a PH shaft with any butt. I found that out with this particular combo for sure. I don't use a jump cue anymore because this particular full length combo gets the job done rather well!

All just my opinion, but I was pleasantly surprised with the PH shaft performance/

Best,

Bob Flynn of Denali cues is the man to speak with about purpleheart shafts.
I can tell you about my impressions of PH shafts.
The first and obvious thing is the colour, some people can't get past the red/purple colour...
The grain is coarser than maple, but not really noticable, similar to a ash shaft I would say.
PH is denser than maple, that means the hit is stiffer.
Since the wood is denser, a PH shaft can have a longer Pro style taper and still deliver plenty of power.

Purpleheart

I used a TNT that I really liked and a buddy who makes cues here in town built me a new break cue with a purpleheart shaft and a much showier butt. Love it but when you move to the 7 foot diamonds it is too much. VERY STIFF and I recommend the samsara tip.

Or if you just want the shaft, Schmelke will do that as well, think it ads like $12 to the price... think it's like $72 or something close to that.

I actually just bought a PH shaft...for my player! Putting a Kamui soft tip on it, for spin. I haven't received it yet, but am looking forward to it. Yes, I know it's unconventional, but I think I'll like the stiff hit.

I recently made a complete PH Cue, the Forearm, Handle and Butt Sleeve were all Purpleheart, so was the Shaft.

The guy emailed me and said that he hit 5 balls in on his first break with it, he said he had never done that before. The Cue weighed in at 21 ounces.

A Purpleheart Shaft will be around 1 ounce heavier than a Maple Shaft.

:sorry:

I don't think it will make a difference in your break.

And if it does, it will all be in your head.

I tried them and just don't care for them.

The tip might make a difference though....

I have a Erwin Purple heart break cue with Purple heart shaft At first It was just ok. I got rid of that white diamond tip and put Andy Gilberts jump break tip on it and now I love it. I had a Layne and nothing against his cue but I like my Erwin better.

The forward weighting of the layne was not for me. I tried several angles and speeds and either I could not control whitie or I was not making any balls on the break.

Also to a certian extent it is the arrow and not the Indian. Prime example break 10 racks with one and break 10 racks with a standard cue and see the difference.
Even playing cues the arrow does help. My son was shooting with my custom Fisher cue a couple weeks ago (from a players cue) and instantly started making more balls.

Anybody know how a purpleheart shat compares with a Dymondwood shaft for breaking?

I had both at the same time. Although it was hard for me to compare because the Diamond wood was forward weighted. I had issues making balls on the snap with the diamond wood. I don't feel it was because of the shaft prob more because of the weighting of it.

If anyone lives close to Chattanooga Tn and wants to try one let me know we can meet up and you can try mine before dropping the coin on one.
