I'm making a few purpleheart shafts, and am close to finishing them and was wondering what to use to seal the pores. Purpleheart has large pores and I know that epoxy normally works, but don't want to use that on a shaft. I currently use a fast drying water based sealer but am not sure that will be the right thing to use.
Any insight appreciated.

Why don't you just use thin super glue ? It's a perfect sealer and you can sand it smooth once applied.

I have used Brazillian Cherry shafts that have similar grain to PH. I just loadem up with Laquer based sanding sealer to fill the grain and then finish like a normal shaft.

Hi Dave: I make a lot of purple heart shafts, and like Primrose, seal them with thin CA glue. Sand them down to 12,000 grit, with MicroMesh, and they will be as slick as deer guts on a door knob.

I have used ca to seal the grain of the playing surface on trouble shafts a time or 2. The key for Me seems to use and leave just enough to seal the grain and not build it up to a full on finish. I also had to work down to a real fine grit to get them as smooth as I like. normally I wouldn't have to go that fine to get the same results. I have a PH shaft here that's about to go on a PH break cue, and i have been trying to decide If i'm gonna use CA or not. The color factor Is what I'm worried about. I may not be able to avoid that in the playing area of the shaft though. The handle section is already sealed with epoxy and the color seems to be holding so far, although I'm sure it will still atleast darken up some as time rolls on.

I sealed a Maple shaft with CA some years ago. Although it stayed pretty clean and didn't dent easily, the customer never liked the feel of the shaft. He had got two shafts and I only did it to one of them but it was probably a year later before he asked me why one shaft would not slide through his fingers as well as the other. He said it felt like a hard plastic shaft.

Just my one experience using it as a sealer.

That's why I don't like to go any thicker with It then simply filling the grain below the surface. I noticed the same thing as what your saying, I can get them smooth, but they don't seem to stay that way if you leave the surface area coated with it too, where as the friction polish lasts longer, and has a much better feel regardless. That leaves Me still stuck as to how to seal the color off on a PH shaft. If I leave the surface exposed for the better feel, then It's virtually useless for locking in the color anyway, and I might as well just use what I normally do.

JER I have not had a problem. I seal with laquer sand burnish wax and burnish again.
Doesn't Dufferin use epoxy or uv the whole way up the shaft on their house cues? Whatever they use might work as well.

Thanks for the responses guys, sorry I haven't responded sooner, I received an eye injury while doing the finish cut on one of these shafts. Had a piece of purpleheart fly into my eye from a weird angle that got around the edge of my faceshield and my glasses. If theres a way to get injured, I usually can find it even if I'm wearing a suit of armor.
RocketQ, where do you get your laquer sealer? I asked at my local Homedepot, and the kid looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Last gallon I bought was from lowes. Parks was the brand name. It is getting real hard to find anymore. Sherwin only sells a sealer not the same stuff.
