Purpose for Rubbing Chalk off Tip

You always see people rubb their shafts face down into carpet when they get done playing, to remove the chalk off the tip.

What is the purpose of this? I used to do it, but i dont anymore.

Is it to prevent the build up of chalk residue and powder in your pool case? Just a question i had.

Yep, that's why I do it. It keeps you case cleaner inside which in the long run, will keep your cue cleaner.

Respect for room and equipment

I clean my tip with an old rag, napkin, paper towel, or my pants leg, NOT THE CARPET. I have more respect for the room owner than too rub my chalk into his carpet. I too clean my tip to preserve the cleanliness of the inside of my case and in turn my shaft that slides in and out of it. If you see someone rubbing there tip on the carpet don't be afraid to point out to them how ignorant that is.

Actually, it's probably an improvement for the carpet in the room where I play!

Most likely what your seeing after play is someone wiping off the chalk before they put the shaft in their case....I suspect for some its either a winning or losing habit.....You will see players after a big win getting congratulated as they take their cue apart and as they are talking to someone they wipe thier tip on the floor (and then usually wipe the chalk mark with their shoe). I would bet that some don't even realize they do that.

Some players will rub thier tip on the carpet before playing to heat up the tip...(especially in winter)..they then "pick" it to remove the glaze that is created, It is now like you have been playing for an hour already.

Some players rub the side of the tip on the rail cloth to burnish the side of the tip. (I hate seeing that one as it leaves marks on the rail coth)

I don't think I've ever been in an establishment where pool is being played where a small bit of chalk on the carpet is going to cause the owner any grief. Actually, like Coastydad said, it would more often than not be an improvement. If the floor is wood or linoleum, I usually use the top of my tennis shoe. It stays on my foot for about an hour at most. I even do it at home before I load up my cues to go play. I dare you to find any of the spots I've used after 5 or 10 minutes of walking in that area.

I don't use the carpet, there might be moisture (spilled drink or something) that will ruin a tip.

It only takes one time to do this and stick a wet tip into your case for it to get ruined.

As a former room owner I noticed small details and habits of pool players. I asked a guy once, jokingly, How would you like me to wipe off my tip on your carpet? I got a dumb founded look and a , ok I won't do it anymore. People just pick up habits, some good, most bad. It was never a big deal to me but I have a bit more respect people who care. Not just about this small detail but everything in life.

Cleaning tip

I remember Ralf Souquet playing in a match on tv clean his tip at the end of the match on the inside of the pocket cloth.

I never even thought of that. Thank you.

I always use a napkin. I don't want the tip of my cue touching the filty carpet or floor. It is bad enough that the butt end touches it.

I have seen slobs spit chewing tobacco on the floor.

I pack my case with the pin up and the tip up but still wipe the shaft and the tip before I put it away.

Yes, the reason is to keep chalk out of your case, which keeps your case and cue cleaner.

I generally clean my cue tip on the carpet. If the floor surface is hard, I'll use the underside of a rail.

That's why I do it. And I try to use a napkin or paper towel.

I alway do it, but don't do it because I do it. You may be copying my mistakes, since I don't know what the heck I'm doing.

The Theory

Cue tips are made of leather.
Chalk absorbs moisture.
Therefore, leaving chalk on the tip will cause the chalk to dry out the leather making it harder.:D
