Purpose for Rubbing Chalk off Tip

You always see people rubb their shafts face down into carpet when they get done playing, to remove the chalk off the tip. What is the purpose of this? I used to do it, but i dont anymore. Is it to prevent the build up of chalk residue and powder in your pool case? Just a question i had.
