Just for kicks I decided to see what would happen if I went all 1880s on one of my cues. Somehow a Cuetec Jump Break migrated into my shop and it had a phenolic ferrule. My staff uses it to play with. So I thought I should probably put a leather tip on it and looked in my bag and all I have are kamuis and mooris so I decided to see what would happen if I just used some leather from shop.
I don't have a lathe so the first thing I did was to use the band saw to cut the end of the ferrule flat. Then I punched out a 15mm circle of 3.5mm cowhide and glued it on.
Well by the time I got it all properly shaped there wasn't much left on the sides. But it actually played decent enough. Not decent enough that I'd want to gamble using this tip but ok for dinking around on the table.
I might start thinking about making tips.
