This past weekend I tested my new MacBook Pro running Windows XP Pro. Notice the quality difference in the "Juan vs. Zach" match and the "Feb 28 Test" video. The "Juan vs. Zach" match was transmitting at about 8-10 fps using my old laptop and the "Feb 28 Test" video was transmitting at the full 29.97 fps most of the time. The result is a much smoother, less choppy video.

Obviously bandwidth helps, but I think the additional processing power from my new laptop makes a huge difference using Flash Media Live Encoder. Now the input video can be converted to the output video much faster. I am converting 720x480 input to 640x480 output. With about a 400-500 Kbps upload link, the quality is great!

Maybe 640x480 output is too high? What do you guys think?

Samiel,

I went back and looked at your last tape and must say that it looks good, real good.

Thanks. I'm going to see how my other camcorder holds up once I get it working correctly. It's natively 640x480, but outputs in MP4 format (at least to its flash card). Hopefully this doesn't mean it need to decrypt and then re-encrypt slowing down the entire process.

I'll let you all know how my testing goes! :p

Well I finally got around to testing my other camcorder. It's a Sanyo Xacti CG9 and natively records at 640x480 in MP4 format. It connects to the computer via USB. Using the same setup as my other camcorder, it doesn't perform quite up to par. Whereas I was getting an average of 29.97 fps on my other camcorder, this one was getting in the 24-25 fps range.

The main differences are:

JVC vs. Xacti CG9
Firewire vs. USB
720x480 uncompressed vs. 640x480 MP4

I am not sure about how data comes into the computer, but it's possible that the firewire is uncompressed and thus my computer has an easier time encoding the data. If the USB data is coming in MP4, it's possible my computer needs to decode and re-encode the data, so maybe a heftier computer would do better. I'm currently running a MacBook Pro (running Windows) with a Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM, so it's no slouch.

I'll have to see if I have any friends who have camcorders I can borrow for further testing.

If you guys want to test Flash Media Live Encoder using various camcorders, I'd love to hear what kind of results you're getting. FME will tell you what your average fps are when it's encoding.

I'm turning the previews off and outputing at 640x480 with the default audio settings. I use the other defaults Ustream.tv saves for FME.
