the learning curve is as follows...we learn we get better....we learn we get better...incrementally...but sometime we have a leap in skill or knowledge....

have you guys experienced coming up and playing at new levels..far beyond your previous levels? and what do attribute to those advances?

I think quantum leaps and slumps are very similar and true ability lies somewhere in the middle. Raise the middle (consistency) and everything improves with it... highs and lows. So I still think the process is "we learn we get better...incrementally". My problem is others increment faster than me.

I BELIEVE I shot for years like a musician that plays by ear. Basically I think most of pool players do at least to some degree. When Joe Villepando LILJoe, started his pool iq Ilike most old dogs wont try new tricks 'not that kind'. but like learning to read music after playing by ear you can really improve Many people in a class will not raise their hand when the teacher ask does anyone have a question . Dont be afraid to learn If you can talk to LIL JOE Sorry JOE V ON SPELLING. this old dog likes new tricks.

At a point, all you have been doing begins to work in concert. You no longer have days when this is working but that is not, it has all jelled. It is not long though till that level of play becomes second nature and you looking to new higher levels to achieve.

I remember a world champion player telling me once he just woke up one day and he was a way better player with seemingly no real explanation. There was an explanation though, it all just came together. All those hours of play, all that observation where you are learning through osmosis and don't even realize it and finally accepting that you are this good a player and you stop second guessing yourself and your talents. You have moved on to an all new level of play. You play expecting great things to happen, and it does as you get even better.

That weaker player you used to be with all their fears and apprehensions fades away like an old memory. You are a new player now, unfortunately though with a whole new set of problems and challenges that come with the higher realm you now occupy.

Years ago I was playing a road player named Ed White. He had a big belt buckle with "Ed" on it so everybody knew he was in town. :D After we were done gambling we sat down and had a beer.

He said a few years back he travelled through the South and was losing money getting the 7 ball from players along his way. Then one day he said he woke up and knew he was a player. He went back through the way he'd come and beat them all giving them the 7 ball.

He told me it was like that feeling you get when you're celebrating something and do 3-4 shots of whiskey. You're fine one minute and then all of a sudden it hits you. You just know you're drunk. lol

Being a student of the game I had to go out and make sure I understood him about the celebrating part. He was right. Now I'm waiting for the next step to come over me.

Best,
Mike
