Question about a Rambow

I am interested in collecting an old Rambow with an inscription.

I'm sure you've all seen this one on E-Bay.

E-Bay Rambow Auction

I wrote the seller about the photos. One of the points is shorter than the rest - judging by the photo at least 1/2" or more. Was this common in Rambow's? I would think he wouldn't have wanted to put his name on cues that were so far off.

I don't know if I woulds say "common" but that kind of point length disparity is definitely something that you will come across with old Rambows as well as Paradise cues from that era. Palmers as well. Guess that asthetics just wasn't as important as making a good hitting cue to those guys back then. That all really began to change when Bushka, Gina, & Szamboti came onto the scene.

My Rambow's points are pretty even for having been made from a Titlist blank. Not perfect, but all probably within 1/8" of each other in length. I would think what you said is correct. Any custom cuemaker back then could have easily sorted through the stock of Titlist cues at their local billiard supply stores, or ordered a block amount from Brunswick and either sold off or returned the ones that were sub-par. I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have picked the nicer ones to put his name on.

I'll send pics of mine of you would like.

Look at the example in the Blue Book(2nd.ed.pp441) the points appear to be no more than 1/8 " off.

Has anyone ever seen an example of his "Superior Cue" line?

No, I would like to hear about it too...

The cue looks like a vintage cue should, any structrual issues? The one thing I would want to know about that beauty is how it hits. I think it will give you an honest answer to how Mr. Rambow's cues felt with this one. WOW

Scott,

Would love to see it. Can you e-mail me at Palmercollector@aol.com

I have some Palmers made with Titlists that had the same problem made in the same time period, 1965-66. I also have some that are perfect. Most are within 1/4" or so.

I just think it's strange that Rambow would put his name on it like that. That's more like a production cue. Also, weren't his cues usually personalized? Have you seen many that just say "Made by Rambow" with no name?

Chris, most were probably personalized at one point in time. They were just penciled in and when the varnish would wear off from use, I would suspect that a lot of the signatures were lost that way. This would especially be the case with cues that got refinished at some point.

I had one of Danny DiLiberto's Rambow playing cues that was refinished by Ginacue around 1970. Signature was lost but the prongs were pretty even (but not perfect). The best thing....it had a a matched Bushka shaft, 2 original Rambow shafts, and 2 like new c. 1970 Gina shafts. Plus a set of joint caps that Ernie made for the cue. Wished I had that baby back....

Yes, it sounds like a keeper. I don't know if you read Danny's book yet, but it's a good read. Those guys really favored Balabushka's over all else at the time. I want a Rambow with the inscription because it seems to me these are the real "classics" and usually shows the cues have been pretty much left alone.

Mine only has the owner's name, plus his first name on the shaft, as it is Bob. From what I gather, Bob Haddad was quite a player in his day, and his son Mark is said to shoot pretty well, too. Pics will be in your inbox in a few minutes. My cue only has one shaft, but has an ivory butt cap. I doubt that it has ever been refinished, and the colors in the veneers are still really bright.

That's pretty much what I'm looking for - think it over, my friend!

i used to have a Rambow, and the points are pretty even for three of the points, but one of the point is off.
