Question about Custom cues or Name brand cue?

The best cue in the world is the one that instills utmost confidence in the player's mind....be it in the form of a custom or production cue.

Tell Ernie Guiterrez at Ginacues he doesn't cull the wood differently and much. much better than production cue companies. He has wood that's aged for 15 years just for the shafts he uses on his best cues. Tell Bob Owen at Shurtz cues that he isn't extremely fussy about the wood he selects for the cue butt and shafts........You can't be serious.......really........you are either misinformed or inexperienced with cues. No McDermot cue will ever compare in quality with a cue made by Joel Hercek, Barry Szamboti, Dennis Searing, Richard Black etc. unless you pick the lowest end of the cues...Merry Widow Cues...made by those cue-makers and other greats.

The wood is the most important element in the cue's construction. Two weeks ago, my cue-maker just glued the veneers for my cue and it isn't scheduled for completion until next Feb/March. There's a lot of gluing and extended drying time involved with a high end custom cue........the shafts will weigh a minimum of 4.0 ozs and the cue butt will weigh 14.5 ozs.......and my cue-maker isn't going to slap in a bolt at the end just to make the target weight of 18.5 ounces. The lead time for my cue from the original order date was 9-10 months.......how many production cues could be made by a cue-maker in that time frame....200......300....400......500?

And you really believe the quality, workmanship and playability of any one of those production cues would favorably compare with my cue being made.......Hah. If you really believe that, then you are a stubborn minded person because the pool world disagrees with you and has for decades since the 60's.

That's all great....but if one of these cues does not instill confidence in the player, it means nothing.

I have nothing against custom cues, I've owned my fair share. Some instilled confidence, others maybe not so much. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am currently playing with an almost 28 year old battle scarred Helmstetter that I do as well with as a couple of my old customs....because it feels like an extension of my arm, and I play confidently with it.
