Question about custom work on a case

Guess this is as good of a place as any to ask...

So I have a brand new 2x4 hand tooled leather case...

the large front pocket has nothing on it... just smooth leather...

as a direct result of seeing the workmanship and incredible detail on the case Jim did for Borana... I have a question...

This is a picture I drew (and then digitized for internet use and to use as an AVatar here) as a logo for my pool team...

Question... could someone have that image (not the words) tooled onto a case? Perhaps with some other things? can that be done after the case is already been built?

If the case is made of tooling leather then it can be tooled. Otherwise the image can be done with laser. Another option is to have a tooled piece done and riveted or glued to the top pocket.

Post a picture of the case and I can tell you more.

I like the idea of the riveted patch. The it could be replaced in the future if he wanted. I don't think I would want a team logo permanently on a case that will last a lifetime.

No concerned about it being a "team" logo so much... I just think the image is pretty cool. and I did draw it myself so it carries some additional personal value.... I did check the bag again last night after thinking about this thread/request... the front pocket on the case is really thing leather compared to the "body" of the case... might make more sense to have something stiched/embroidered on that pocket if thats where I wanted it... but then I run into the problem of the thread eventually coming loose.... Im a bit lost here but I do know I would like some "personalizing" done on the case, it is rather plain right now. I plan on keeping this case, until it falls to pieces or gets passed to my son or whatever...

Dawg,

I can't see your case. For some reason it never stops loading for me. Here is the thing though. Since it's a Swift I assume that the upper pocket is in fact tooling (veg tan) leather. If the case has been dyed a darker color then it can be tooled/carved but the tooling will be in the same color or darker than what it is now. In some cases, depending on the dye job the color can be lightened somewhat but this is probably not a good option.

The good news is that you have several options to get your image onto the case in a coolk way. You need to look around your area for local leather workers and see who might be willing to look at your case and help you figure out the best way to do it. I'd start with Tandy Leather Stores www.tandyleatherfactory.com and the LeatherWorker.net forum www.leatherworker.net to find the people closest to you who do that work.

Personally I could see a cool leather applique done either as a carved piece or a lasered piece that is glued or riveted on in a cool way.

I'd have it hand sewn but you might be looking to pay more than you want to for someone to do that. If you're hands-on though the Tandy store can teach you how to do it.

John
