Question About Dings in the Cue Shaft

Hi, I have about 8 cues, and my favorite one has a few dings in the shaft. Some of the dings are somewhat deep. I know that you can hold the ding over some steam and it will make the wood expand, but one of the deeper dings just won't pop out. Should I hold it over the steam longer, or do I run the risk of damaging my shaft?

Fast Replies: Hi last two, Normally about 30 to 60 seconds does the trick under the steam, then I use my glass rod to smooth out the area and then sand it down a little. Water on wood is never a good thing. This one sounds like a trip to a good cue repair guy for him to look at it might be in order. :p

The old glass rod trick, and Fast Larry is right. It will do the least amount of damage to the shaft (IMO) when trying to smooth out those dings.

I do not like putting water on wood, so if the ding is small I go after it with the glass rod. You can take one hell of a ding out if you rub hard and long enough. I guess a coke bottle would work also.

Ok, if it's a good deep ding, I am lazy and I cheat and get the t pot up to a nice boil and I steam it. The rod then lays the wood back down nice and even.

It is a tool everyone should own and carry in their cue case. When you ding a shaft and feel it, normally letting it flop against a chair, get on it at once with the rod before it sets up and it hardens. A ding in a shaft drives me nuts. You can buy one out of the Mueller catalog.
