Question about joints

Recently picked up a Predator cue with a Uni-lock joint. I hate it and want to replace it with a traditional joint by McDermott.

So, a few questions: Is it feasible? How will the hit be affected? What should I expect to pay for this work?

I'm planning to spend four days at DCC this year. Am I likely to find a cuemaker/repair guy who can make this switch?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

well. i dont know that you will find a maker to do that there. it deff needs plugged and redrilled and tapped. both ends. pred also uses some goofy phenolic insert where the pin is. maybe u wana go 3x8-10 southwest style or radial. then maybe transition can be better bc those pins have a shoulder also.

Like Dave said, once the pin and insert are removed, both ends will have to be bored out, plugged, and then drilled and tapped for whichever joint style you want. I charge $75 to change the joint style, just to give you a point of reference.

take your cue to dcc and see if you can use your cue in trade towards one with a 3/8x10 joint. The joint pin replacement is not worth the trouble when you could just get a cue with the joint you like. You can then get a predator to fit the new cue if you like.

Same Scenario but different

I also have a question about this. I have a cue that is 3/8-10, and would really prefer the 14 piloted. would it be feasable to have this changed also, or would this be a waste of a good cue? Any help or advise is greatly appreciated.

For the butt, Uni-Loc to Radial or 3/8-10 with a shoulder can be accomplished without coring. The shaft will need to be bored, cored, and re-tapped though. This switch should be relatively inexpensive.

The weight and balance may change very slightly depending on materials used.... whether you'll be able to notice the difference or not is debatable.

Of course. If you like the looks of the cue but want a different joint style, change it. If the cue is valuable or collectible and you may sell it someday, I would advise against the change.

Okay. what about the shafts? are they able to still be used? or will i need new ones made? also, how long does this process take?

I would change the shaft(s) to match.

Time frame is about a week to ten days right now.
