question about shaftwood

Why is it that some shaft wood likes almost washed out? And others looks really smooth and rich, I have pictures to show the difference, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about without them, please respond.

Shafts are not supposed to have a shinny finish on them. A painted clear finish, will feel sticky, after time. Some cheep Qs have a fiberglass coating over the wood. A good shaft should have a sealer on it to keep out moisture & dirt, but not a shinny finish...JER
