Question about using veneer wood for rings?

I was wondering if anyone is using veneer wood for ring work? If so could you share how to do this? I have tried to punch out rings with a small press with no luck. Please let me know if there are any little tricks or things to avoid.

thanks, Jimbo.

I just did that yesterday. I just cut out the hole with a .750 Forstner Bit, placed a ring over the hole, drew the outline of the ring and cut it out on the scroll saw. Seemed to work fine.

My question

It is my understanding that rings made this way will NOT have a consistent color around the entire circumfrence once they are turned down. Correct me if I am wrong as I do remember having seen ringwork made from veneer material in some higher end cues.

I glue my veneer sheets together just the same as when gluing up veneers for points. I have a little jig made up of two boards with a couple of 5/8 holes and a couple of 3/4 that are properly spaced in one of them so as when cut apart they are large enough to make rings. I then drill holes in the veneer sheet that is clamped tightly between the two boards using the proper size forstner bit, making a nice clean hole. Then proceed to the band saw to cut apart.

You are absolutely right about veneers cut for deco-rings will have different colors as they will have end-grain on two sides where as if a dowel is used the end-grain is facing the phenolic rings that it is sandwiched between.

I just did my first set of these using black and some white at .018 thick veneer. Came out good until 2 of them split when applying the pipe clamp for glueing. I did them pretty much the same as Dick, except I didn't glue up the sheets together first. I drilled them individually and then assembled, big mistake. Lesson learned

i did my first set caveman style.. but they didnt split so i do them like this

glue veneers like normal.
this particular cue had 2 .250 rings on each side so i just glued them rings in the middle of a solid veneer set..
then chucked them up around the .250 ring .
then centerdrilled and bored them middle to .750.
slid them on and glued them up like rings

this is the cue i copied. my fav buttsleeve
