There was a brief discussion in the Dechaine/Krause thread regarding Shane's play overseas. Which got me thinking about other top players and how they do in other countries.

Looking at the top 10 (or 20), is it possible to compare a player's win percentage in matches played on home vs foreign soil? Say, over the past 5 years.

We can classify home soil as European and Asian countries instead of someone's specific country. Then obviously America for Fedor and Shane.

Something like

Filler (68% in Europe) - (54% outside of Europe)

We've done a little of this in the past and were unable to find an effect. I recall people used to say SVB underperformed when playing internationally compared to playing in the US. When we investigated that, though, we found it wasn't true.

This is a recurring theme. It is common for people to convince themselves of some effect based on a small amount of data
-- doesn't perform under pressure
--competes poorly against women
--plays well from behind
--does poorly in short races
and on and on...

Then sometime in the future when the player loses a short race or stages a comeback you remember that and say "ahah! just as I suspected"--nearly ignoring the dozen intervening matches. This--aka confirmation bias--is pretty rampant in all of us I think.

No Americans have done better overseas than SVB, so I doubit

And you present about the same amount of corresponding data as "them". Zero.

Where's your "data"?
