I am working on an article for the local paper that I run here in Arizona and I have a question for the room owners and tournament directors out there...

What can players do to make hosting or running a tournament a positive experience for you?

I run a pool room in Florida we have two free entry tournaments a week and the only thing I can say is to spend money at the bar or come in early and rent a table to practice . Spend money and Have Fun

Quit complaining...

About rules: The rules are designed to keep the tournament "flowing", to minimize disagreements, and to be fair for *all* players. For every top gun player who wants a rule changed to favor themselves, there is a lesser skilled player who wants to keep the rule. (And the other way around.)

About payouts: There is little or nothing the TD can do about payouts. Go talk to the owner of the establishment.

About other players or bar customers: If the tournament is in a bar and the TD is a volunteer, the TD probably has no more authority than you do to kick people out of the tournament, tell drunks to leave, etc. Go see the bartender. Bartenders are trained to deal with these things. Keep in mind that the drunk disrupting the tournament may be a good tipper or big spender - and bars are in business to make money.

Asking when the tournament will start: If the tournament starts at 8:00, this means the last player can arrive at 8:00, then the TD needs to set up the brackets for the tournament. This takes time. If a lot of people keep asking the TD questions when the TD is setting up the brackets, it will take longer for the tournament to start as the TD is answering questions instead of setting up the brackets!

Please don't ask the TD questions when the TD is playing a match in the tournament. This is distracting. Wait until the TD finishes his/her match, then ask.

A volunteer TD is *not* God with all sorts of authority and power to change things. They are usually just other players like yourselves who have volunteered to run the tournament because no one else is willing to. Be courteous to the TD and thank them for running the tournament.

And... If you don't like the way the tournament is being run, you can volunteer to run it yourself!
