Question for the cuemakers out there.

All,

I am a pretty tall sort of bloke, 6'6". I am looking at getting a longer cue, something in the region of 62". I have spoken (via email) with a number of cuemakers in the states who say one of two things:

a) No. :mad:

b) Possibly could make a longer (32 - 33") shaft.

My question: I would have thought making a shaft this length might make things a bit too 'whippy'. Is this the case in your experience? :confused:

I currently play with a predator sneaky pete (58", it is like a matchstick in my hands!). :)
 
why not ask a cuemaker to add a 4-5 inch extension on the bottom section of your cue. This should be inexpensive and almost any cue maker or machinist would be able to handle this....this would also address the whippy issue ....

though the length of the shaft should not affect the stiffness but the taper should...I guess the stiffness issue comes into play if the shaft would have a longer stroking area...

Seeing you play with a predator, I would suggest a 60" cue seeing predator partials come as long as 30". Even though you are tall you would be surprised how much the added two inches will help. It will add a little deflection but still being able to use a predator will keep you at a comfortable compromise. If you ever need a longer case. Creative Inventions ( Joe Porper )
makes them.
 
Not sure how this would work....but this thought popped in my head when I read this post. What about a section piece for inbetween the joint. Have no idea if this would work.....maybe one of the cuemakers could say weather or not this is theisable. Obviously it would change the hit......just a thought I had.
 
Actually, I have done this for people on there existing cues. It does work, all have said that it does add deflection. But that
would also be true with any addition in length.

Is there any truth to Keith Kuston Kues making cues again. I heard alot about him years back, then nothing. I bought one second hand one with 12 points.....and ordered 2 from him to my specs. Some of his cues hit like a tree.......just wondering if anyone remembers those cues.....or knows if he is making cues again?
 
How would an additional 1 inch on a shaft add delfection ?

Any time you make the shaft longer, you add to your deflection. Even on the Predator and Meucci dotted shafts. I have done them for many players and about 75 percent have asked me to make it standard length again. For the average player who plays just to enjoy playing but still has a competitive side a longer cue is okay. The road players that I know of that are tall usually have the extra inch on the Butt end of the cue, to keep the deflection down. I would rather it be even on both sides but but some players have there own logic and I definately agree with their reasons. When they play, they get paid.

Do you mean Deflection as the same as a "Whippy shaft" ?

Hi qguy, I think what Michael is referring to is when you lengthen the shaft, it would have more deflection. I don't see how lengthening the butt would affect how the cue plays.

By adding length to the butt it also will deflect more than the shorter one, even though it's a larger dia. The longer, the more deflection. Kinda like a fishing rod, short is stiffer, and one with the same dia., but longer is a little whipper.

Seems like I am jumping in all over the place, but this forum thing is very cool. Exchanging information is how I learn, and from each you knowledge comes...
A tall excellent player and I discussed this issue any years ago. He kept the same length shaft and had a longer butt designed with the wrap further back than standard. When he got it, he liked how it felt in his hands but because of the added length so too grew the weight, and his ability to control the CB also left. After the weight was removed, all went well and I am sure he is still playing with the same cue.

The stroke that is not used to a new balance point and total cue length. Actually, one can adjust to a top-heavier cue with a longer shaft. It is easy with non-wristy strokes, but when the stroke needs a little wrist action, the muscle memory is thrown off when the wrist starts to act and the loose fingers start to grip just before impact. Thus, the "deflection", or the imprecise shot. Ergo, the longer shaft per se does not cause the deflection, but the stroke that is used to a shorter shaft and a different balance point causes the deflection.

Are you referring to Shaft Deflection (stiff /whippy) or CB deflection ?
 
I was referring to shaft deflection. 1 inch longer on the shaft does add more deflection. If you understand the logic of deflection versus stiffness or whippiness, then you know it can't be described in one paragragh. This is in no way a cop out, it takes years to learn. I have tried every tip and ferrule that I carry, also experimented with different shaft tapers. It is very easy to get confused. It is even easier to say the wrong thing. Some of us cue makers try to offer suggestions from what we have experienced. Some times it is helpful, most of the time it sets us up for the chopping block because we don't log our findings and produce the statistics. If every player was exactly the same that would be to easy, but it would also eliminate the term custom.
