Question From A Tightwad?

I have often considered upgrading to a custom cue, but to be honest I'm too $*#&@!%ed cheap to spend $500.00 or more on a cue.

I have been looking at Schmelke cues on their website. They seem to offer a fancy SP for less than anyone else out there with a good amount of customized options.

My questions are:

-How do they play? I'm considering a 5/16 X 18 joint with a laminated shaft and pro taper with another break shaft.

-How comparable is their low deflection laminated shaft when compared to a Predator 314?

-How even are their points cut? I like high and even points.

-How good is the wood they use?

Is it possible that they are selling true quality quasi custom cues for a couple Franklins for tightwads like me?

I bought my first 'good' (i.e. over $500) cue right out of college when I got my first job. It was a Schon. I was a tightwad and really hesitant to spend the money, but I forced myself to. I've played with that cue for 15 years now and it brings me joy every time I use it. I don't know what else I would have spent that money on, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't still be appreciating it several times a week.

A higher price only hurts once, but bringing out the same cue you're not completely happy with will hurt every time you use it.

Truly, words of wisdom.

Answer to your question ...

It is an investment, not just a cost.

== MY post concerning a thread about spending $1,100 on a MeDermott=

Personally, I would not spend that kind of money for a production cue. For $1,100-1,200, you can get a very good playing and looking cue from Shurtz cues (Bob Owen, Gabe's dad is cuemaker and partner). The closest comparable hit and feel of their cues to another cuemaker would be a Southwest cue, IMO. (I have directly compared my $1,100
SHURTZ with a $2,800 Southwest cue, FYI, besides other
cuemaker's cues as well).
4-6 Months is the usual wait for a custom with Bob. He also makes his versions of the 314-1 and 314-2 shafts, if that is what you like.
His email is Bob@Shurtzcue.com and the website is Shurtz cues

I have a $300 Shurtz and it plays like my $1200
Scruggs which I really like.

Dear LWW, I am a tightwad too, and if you hunt around enough, you can get custom cues for less than 500.

In most cases...you get what you pay for. If you're a beginner...buy a Dufferin two piece house cue. As you get better....have the shaft tapered by a cue repair guy to suit your needs. When you're ready to step up...buy something better, and you'll have a good idea of what you want in a custom cue.

Haven't decided.

I have a couple of nice cues now.

I have a Viking Wizard with a 314 shaft from ebay as well as a Predator sneaky pete from ebay.

I have been making custom cues for 10 years now. Most of my cues sell for under 5 bills. PM me with what you are looking for and I'll see what I can do. RAT
