Question on cue stick, please help

Hi. I am a beginner of 8 balls, and I have been looking for a 2-piece cue stick. I went to big 5 and Sears, and it turns out that most of their cues come with a wooded flat tip, meaning I have to get something to rub it up and shape it to a rounded tip so that I can play with it. Since I just started playing pool for a couple of months, I really don't know how to do it.
I am wondering how to find a good cue stick that could come with a rounded tip ( I dont have to rub it up or shape it before I can actually play with it)? If I buy a cue stick online, like these two

, will they come with a rounded tip or a flat tip?

With less than $55, what cue stick should I get? Where to get it? What brad? I have heard of Dufferin, Vector and Action, which one is better within my budget?

Please help. Thanks a lot.

first time

i'd go with the inexpensive dufferin cue which will have a basic leather tip that would play ok. but any tip can be replaced for $15 to $30 depending on your selection of tip. the dufferin will last a couple years if you take care of it. they use decent maple woods from canada. if you are ready to pony up $200 (shipped) then take a look at my personal custom made signed dale perry cue. its 20 oz, 12.75mm triumph leather tip, radial pin, pro taper shaft. this is a great cue for the money and would last you a long time, then you;ll also be able to resell it for about the same price you bought it.

send me your email and i'll send you some more pics. click on the attachment for the pic

Plenty to choose from.
I will make sure the tip is shaped and ready to go for you.
I will also include a tip tool for future touch-up
Please PM if interested

But, this gentleman will make you a great deal and IMHO for the $$$ these cues play really well for a person just getting into the game :)

If you want the best cue to buy for cheap and will hit great do this.

Find a pool room near you that supplies dufferin house cues. Go to this pool room and find one that is in good condition. Offer the owner of the pool room 20$ for it, he will say yes. Then take that cue to a cue maker and have him point a joint in it for you and make it a 2 piece. A cue maker will probably charge around 50$ for this service.

If you take care of that cue you will literally NEVER EVER have to buy a cue again no matter how long you play or how good you get. Im not saying you couldn't get a nicer cue, but there really would never be a need playing wise.

This cue will have the best hit you can find, and you can get him to put what ever pin you'd like into it. I recommend the standard 3/8x10 because then it would not be hard to find a replacement shaft if anything went wrong.

But how about those two cues I linked above? Are they good (I know its cheap).

Whatever you decide to buy. just make sure it has a maple shaft. roll it on a table to make sure it is not warped. Once you decide your sure your going to stay with the game. You can always upgrade and use your first cue as a break stick.

In my personal opinion mcdermott makes a crap cue. And also the tapper on there shaft sucks. I don't know 1 good player that plays with a european tapper.

As far as the dufferin its decent, but as you grow in pool you will most likely realize that the sneaky pete look on cues is the best, which is why i recommend starting with it so you don't spend more money later. i feel that painted cues and graphics on cue is better suited as firewood.

Definatly get something with a pro tapper, and a maple shaft.

How do you guys like this cue stick?

or this one

Will the tips be shaped ? Which one do you guys like better? Any advise?

Either of the 2 cues that you've linked to would make a suitable starter cue for you. Go with the one you like. You'll likely have to shape the tip no matter which one you get. Have the owner of the pool-hall show you how to do that.
Enjoy the game.

Most tips are already shaped.... There just nickel instead of dime. So I believe that is false.

every mcdermott i've owned has had a pro taper. what exactly about mcdermott is crap?

What is a sneaky pete looking cue?

What are some good sneaky pete cues for around $50 or 60? Dufferin or what? What websites can I buy it?

Dufferin went out of bussiness. I dont know why, they made the best house cues on the planet. I just posted a cheap players sneaky pete.

The sneaky pete is a style of cue ment to just look like a house cue, for the purpose of not showing off your cue. So if you get decent you can gamble in bars and such a people will think its a house cue.

So you would choose Players sneaky pete ($50) over Mcdermott Lucky cues and Mcdermott Nitro cues ($40) ?

You been given Some good advice. everybody has their preferences. The Mcdermott is a good choice, all maple cue, You can change the weight of it if you want. Good option. You will not be disappointed. Go for it. Goodluck!
