Question: Paying Opponent's Table Time

If you're gonna play cheap, play where it's free or flat rate.

Player that play cheap usually expect to split the time if there is any. Make it clear up front is the best way.

Bigtruck said it all. Make the time part of the bet. That way there is no ambiguity.

If you're playing cheap sets, say something like "$10 a set plus time" or "$10 a set and we split time"

That way it's clear.

If it's a tough game or I feel that I have the worst of it, I always say BEFORE the match that we pay our own time.If I feel I have the best of it and feel fortunate that the guy is even playing, I don't ever say anything before the match but will ALWAYS pay their time if I win no matter how much it is. I don't want to give the 'pigeons' any reason not to want to play me than necessary.

There is always some gray area where the winner feels that the time is way too much compared to the winnings and the loser gets a bit ill. It seems that whoever loses is a little ill anyways and this can really piss 'em off if there is no understanding up front. Bottom line is to agree on all things beforehand unless it's a fish, and then you do everything you can to keep them on the hook for as long as possible.

How does everyone handle paying your opponent's table time if you have won? I've heard that it shouldn't exceed 30% of your total winnings, which seems a bit excessive to me. At what point do you choose not to pay their time? Not everyone agrees to split time before a match-up and I'm curious how other people handle this issue. Is there a standard rule that everyone follows or does it just depend on the players and amount won?

If you are gambling with a friend you should always pay there time unless stated before hand that each is responsible for their own time. Sometimes, you may not be betting very much and are only playing to "tune up" or stay in stroke, in which case you should also pay as a token of saying thank you for playing.

Most on here have mentioned all the reasons you should pay somebody's time, and the most note worthy one is.......................................
TO KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS. (PUN INTENEDED)   :D

This topic reminds me of the scene in Color of Money where Cruise and his girlfriend are arranging a match with some guy at the bar, and he leaves them paying for his drink.

I think no matter what happens, someone is going to feel like they're getting a bum deal. Nobody really wants to shell out more cash than they want or need to.
