In a lot of the old footage of pool matches I have almost all of the players who smoke put their cigarettes on the rail while shooting. My question for players who smoke is this.

Do you think it is still an acceptable practice to "let em burn" on the rail while your shooting, or is it pretty much an open invitation for the house man to chew your ass out?

I smoke but don't think I have ever put a cig on the rail unless it was a shitty bar and I was drunk. Some older players still do that in the pool room here in town. They get chewed about it too.

yea thats pretty much a thing of the past and as far as im concerned anyone that leaves a burning cig on the rail just has no class at all.i was playing in a tournament a few months back and i played this older guy who was smoking the biggest, ugliest and the most foul smelling cigar you have ever seen:mad: talk about a great shark move

Where I play, you don't even approach the table with a cigarette. Leave it back at your table with your drink, or you might find yourself asked to leave. Dropped ashes can burn holes in the cloth.
Even being a smoker, I find this old practice totally unacceptable.

Well in Pheonix it doesn't matter any more since we have the state wide smoking ban. But before that occurred smoking wasn't allowed around the tables at any pool hall.

On the old Brunswick GC's they made some tables with ash trays built into the corner castings, now that's 'old school'....

of the past. In fact, I have been known to tell playes shooting with a cigarette in their mouth, to get it out of their mouth while shooting, and not on the table either. Usually young newbies that don't have any couth.

There are signs on the wall at both ends of the tables where I play in town here (and on my home table as well) that read "No beer or cigarettes on or near table!" in big bold letters..
